what would be the contributing factors causing the spider to break? broke two lobes, just short of the outer shieve, close to the buttons. any input will be helpful. stock primary, 94 vmax 600

I have the same problem, broke one though. I think because my bushings in the sheaves were worn that it allowed the sliding sheave to bind and rock, causing the breakage.
everything seemed fine, no excess play anywhere. all the bushings and slides seemed to be within tolerances.
dirty sliders will do this, its binding the moveable sheave against the spider and the spider loses the battle against the centrifigal force created from the weights. If its a yamaha twin all the more, they add in the extra bit of torsional vibration to really eat up the clutch parts , the triples dont wear them nearly as fast.
