Is there a seal that sits in the impeller, or does the impeller just sit in front of the mechanical seal? Thanks.

Yes the mechanical seal is behind the impeller and a b*tch to change...

Yes, but is there a seal on the inside of the impeller and if so does the rubber face into the impeller, or does the ceramic side face the impeller?

The rubber side faces the impeller, the ceramic side faces the mechanical seal. The rubber cup on the mechanical seal pushes against the ceramic part inserted in the back of the impeller. Don't forget loctite on the impeller bolt.
