I've heard this term used many times, many people would rather just gut there stock silencer then put an aftermarket one on. Why would anyone wan to do this, and if someone wanted to do this what is involved in gutting it?? Do you just cut the welds and remove the insides and then reweld it. Anyone that could shed some light on this for me it would be appreciated

It HAS been done on the viper and srx style silencers, but it was found with dyno testing that it made no noticeable gains on the power output. However, on the sx style silencers of the non-powervalved triples, cutting a 2" hole in the final baffle adds a couple ponies and really makes them sound a lot better.

I didnt expect to see any horsepower gains really out of it, i was more interested in the weight saving it would give you because the thing must way close to 15 lbs or more. I was just interested in how they go about gutting them if there was a specific way to do it or simply remove everything

Im not sure about exactly what they all removed inside, but i would think there are definately more efficient and easy ways to remove weight. Or if weight is REALLY that important get an aftermarket silencer and take the one or two horsepower loss. As for HOW they do it, i know they took a plasma cutter and just cut one of the broad sides out of it, removed what they wanted, and welded it back up.

No weight isnt an extremely important issue really, i just had the pipes and silencer off to change the chaincase oil and figured i'd ask about gutting it while it was off. I think im going to look into getting it done, if it saves a few pounds and i could do it myself may as well. I have access to a plasma cutter and welding equipment just curious about exactly what they removed inside

Does nobody know what is removed when a silencer is gutted?? I just dont wanna screw anything up inside there, someone said before either drill 5 1/2 inch holes or drill one big 1 and a half inch hole in the bottom baffle, is this correct??? any help on this would be appreciated because im a little confused as to what was removed

I put a bender silencer on my viper, I was going for a loud sound, not weight savings. So on that silencer, one of the ends is actually just riveted on, and then there is a gasket on the underside of the lid, When you "gut" a silencer, in my mind, you just remove all the fiber packing in the can. Thats what I did. Made it a hell of alot louder!!! Then that can eventually got holes all over. So I invested in bender triple pipes to get a "real" sound. Also in that bender silencer there are sound panels that have holes drilled in it. I would assume you could cut those out also. This is a bender silencer mind you......... Hope I didn't confuse anyone, I am#$%&* :yrules:

drill a hole in the final baffle. you will only get sound improvements, i didn't realize how much until i had a stock one beside mine last year, quite a difference. as far as the aftermarket can mine was way to loud got tired of listening to it so i took it off. it came on the sled but i dont know who makes it the previous owner called it a stinger. i'll have to take a pic and see if anyone can identify it.

I assume you are talking about gutting the silencer for the SRX being that is your listed machine. I haven't heard anyone doing it on that sled. I tried cutting open the Viper silencer last year with a plasma cutter, but there is nothing but a few hollow chambers in there. There wasn't really anything to gut or drill. I scrapped that idea. The Viper does a portion of it's silencing in the pipe itself. It has baffles in the pipe. The only aftermarket silencer I have seen used on the SRX was the Bender. It was kind of noisy, but didn't seem to lose much performance.

I think Fix Power Sports was doing some kind of mod to the stock pipe...anyone know what they where doing?

Yes, they were doing something with the baffles in the pipe, but he also had an airbox mod and a head mod to go with it. I talked with him a few times over the years, but everytime his story changed a little. First he told me the things I mentioned above and that this KING COBRA KIT would outrun a piped Viper and the cost was like $1100. Yes, I was very skeptic. The next time I talked with him after he totally bragged the above kit up, he claimed.....well I don't do that kit anymore. The only way to achieve those results is to do the above AND a big bore kit. Yikes!!! That's alot of $$$$ to run with a piped Viper. No thanks. Sounded too fishy to me.

So does the 2002 SRX use the same chamber design as the viper silencer?? or does it have actual baffles inside it that you could remove. I am only asking because the older srx's you could remove the baffles in, i just dont want to cut this thing open just to find that theres nothing that can be done and have to weld it back up again

Thanks journeyman for the info. I have a heavily modified multipipe Viper and just bought another Viper this fall, I have ported the engine but was going to leave the single pipe on it. Viper stock pipes go cheap on Ebay and was thinking about picking one up and play with it a little.

I drilled my xtc silencer and then put the stock one back on it - too loud for responsible trail use IMO.

Both of my SRX's have gutted stock silencers , saves money and creates less heat under the hood than a aftermarket can . I had a bender on my 98 and the welds broke where the pipes connect to the can. I think the gutted stock silencer sounds great, at idle it will sound like a V8. However it is very very loud.

Maxximum Performance used to offer a service to this to a stocker.(SRX) They said you would gain 3-5 HP with only a 5 or 6 DCBL increase. Of course they are no longer around.
