One of my father in laws sled is a 97 xtc 500 and since last year its been running on one cylinder. Change plugs no difference. SO since reading on here instead of asking what to do I knew the first thing I would have been told is to clean the carbs. In about 20 mins the carbs where on the bench and I began removing the bowls ect. Just curious is it ok to only spray carb cleaner into all the jets to clean or do I need to remove the needle and inside parts?
Anyway back to the story, as I was flipping the carbs around I could here a rattling sound. I noticed the throttle side carb door thing that opens and closes with throttle rail was not opening. So I took the top cap off and to my amazement theres a screw that holds the door to rail to open a close with the throttle and it was sitting in the bottom rattling around. I put a drop of locktight on the screw and put it back together and viola sled was a little screaming missle again. Im just really happy to have something turn out so positive and to finally dare to remove the carbs and once I was in there I couldnt believe how easy it was to do. Hope this may help someone down the road some day. :2strokes:

Absolutely, Hey ski just curious did you get the pm I sent ya? I was trying to hunt down a recoil for my friends 02 800 mxz

Pretty inspirational story!
I've yet to take mine apart, and don't want to unless I need to. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. LOL.

Were your carbs dirty from what you could see?
Did you use compressed air to clean them out too?

Ya the carbs are not to bad to work on. Just a little confidence is all you need.

As in another thread about the rear skid today says it sure is easier in your garage than on the trail. I've done an R&R of the carbs at 8 below in the wind. Not much fun.

Ya you can just spray some of the jets and circuits with carb cleaner. Usually I leave the needle in and wipe it carefully if there is any residue on it. wear safety glasses and blow all the passages clear. Reset the fuel screw after you remove and clean that passage. Finally don't forget to clean your airbox and wipe down your boots.

I didnt reset the fuel screw since I didnt have that much knowledge but with that not being the real problem I guess its best left alone. And ski I think I left it a couple of days ago. All I need is the best place to find a recoil. 2002 mxz 800. Let me know and thanks.
