could be a few things
Weak stator
corroded or loose wie (those are fun to find)
load contral relay? possibly
I dont think the 300 watt systems are suppose to dim at idle

tomseal, what other things happen with a weak stator?are these known to go on vipers?I never had trouble with it..I installed two new headlights..diffrent from stock..both 12v didn't think that would bother..its a flicker more than a dim I guess you could say..it dims out and flickers bright and low

I thought that was a normal snowmobile trait. at least all my sleds have done that.

Eric,
I have never had that happen to me on my sled. Not a flicker anyways. Mine stays bright all the time. I would keep an eye on it. If your out riding by yourself on a dark night and you lose your lights than I would check those things.
What RPM you have your idle set? 1500 is perfect. Set it when the motor is hot.
Just trying to help because I find it unusual for a 300 watt system to do that.
Yamahizal, you have the 250 watt ignition in your sled. They somewhat dim at idle.

no it doesn't dim like most snowmobiles do..the sled has never done it before until last night after riding..the sleds headlights would seem like they lost power and be dim even when riding once in awhile..but mainly when its sitting there idling..the lights go real dim giving only a few feet of light

i had a ET 300 with almost identical problems cause was a faulty voltage regulator.... give that a check before stator

well i went out tonight..it was alittle dark but I started the sled up and it still did it..so I wiggled some wires by the anit-freeze coolant and I think it may have been the wires that go down by the bottom of the carbs..i believe there was a [ost on here about viper wire rub through..so I tied it off with a zip tie to my antifreeze hose and its fine now...tomorrow in the light i'll check it to see if it rubbed through or what the deal was but tieng them wires off by the coolant filler fixed the problem..

Yup its the classic wire rub through on the rear motor mount/tunnel. Do a search and you will see EXACTLY how to fix it.

yamaholic-is the brake light wiring in that harness that has rubbed through...either that or somethings froze..have hit some water and its been really cold..have had other yamaha's that have done that..but if the brake light wiring is in there i'm pretty sure its d/c...the lgiht is on but the brake light doesn't brighten when the brakes are applied...

yeah i'm going to take the harness out today...just wondering if the harness has the brake light wiring in it cause the brake doesn't illuminate when applied..not sure if its frozen or if this is the problem..thanks rocket
