I took my viper out for a test run after installing a bender clutch kit and at first it worked great . then the secondary started making a terrible tinny clanging noise . the secondary will not completely close up now . i noticed when i installed the spring and helix it was kind of sticking ,and the spring seems real weak.i can push the secondary in (while rotating it ) very easily . Also when i was taking off from a dead start i could feel the secondary slamming together .Im thinking the spring is bad or ? i dont know if i installed it wrong or what happened . If anyone knows a # i can call Bender at Id appreciate it
i would think either you installed it wrong or you set it at way to low tension..
take of the secondery clutch, take the helix off, and put it back together the right way, and what tension degrees was it set at now?? i dont know what kit you are running but 70-80 is normal..
you twisted the helix clockwise to get it to fit on the bolts? the more tension you set , the harder it will be to twist by hand. check the bushings in the secondery olso.. hope this helps..

Thanks for the help , I set the seconday per benders specs at 80 DEGREES setting hole 6 on the helix and 2 in the sheave .i did have to twist the helix slightly to line it up with the bolt holes .i went back out and looked at it this morning and the spring seems really weak . i can rotate the secondary totally by hand clockwise until it bottoms out . Also it wont spring back out on its own . Do you think i should try a different setting on the spring ?

dont take this as an insult, but did you twist the spring the wrong way. i have done this before.

Yea -it almost sounds like you didn't twist it far enough to have it installed correctly. When it says 6-2 at 80deg. it means you have to twist it @ 80degres-to get the helix on the buttons in the correct place. I've done it a million times -its just hard to explain.
Hope this helps -Matt

it really sounds like your twist is wrong. It should not be that easy to align the holes for a 80 wrap. This should need some force to get this to align. I would take it apart again and twist counterclockwise...try again and let us know.
if you hold the sheaves in your left hand and the helix in your right hand , you twist clockwise til you get the bolt tower, olso you see that the "arms" of the helix matches the plastic buttons! itf tou set it at 80 degrees, you will need to use some force to get it right!
Just a note make sure the button(s) did not fall out and that they are within specs...

Gotta love this site !
All you guys were right , i called Bender this morning and they told me the same thing . I took it apart and there was no preload on the spring at all . got it back together and WOW ! huge and i mean huge difference . My sled has never stood up on the rear bar like it does now ,i took it for a few rips across the yard and the clutches were still nice and cool to the touch so i think i got it now . Thanks again for the help . This site is a must have for any one that owns or is even thinking about being an owner of a Yamaha . Best place for Yammi info on the whole damn net , hands down !
