Only 1800 miles there shouldn't be much wrong with that motor
just give it a good look over, and go with OEM parts..

That's what I thought too. Ya it is the ring that causes the damage but I thought it was the poor ring land design that is the real issue.TJ500 said:wasn't the problem with the pistons and not the rings?...

yeh... thought the ring pins were falling out and allowing rings to spin and catch exaust port...
might be wrong but changing rings alone might not insulate him from the pending disaster....

No you are right and I was wrong I misunderstood the recall. It is the pistons. This will be a job for next summer. Thanks for the info.
My bad

Can you provide a link or some further info on this recall...I'm assuming it would also relate to the 97 Vmax 600 XT, is there only certian VIN numbers that are affected?

as far as i know ALL ' 97 twins only had the problem.
just get '98 OEM pistons and you'll be fine..
Hey moss how many miles do ya have on your sled. I have heard that on the 97's if it is going to happen it happens around 3000 miles or around 3500 miles. I think i read a post that said " I have not seen a 97 with the recall last more than 3500 miles without this problem accuring, but if it does not occur in this time frame it is likely that it wont happen. To me it is not worth waitin to long to get the problem fixed.

Its got about 15 000 Km's, so something like 10-12 000 Miles I guess. Previous owner told me the engine was replaced about 5K ago, but I'm starting to doubt anything this guy told me about this sled
