Guys, first of all im cheap. Thats pretty obvious. What I did is went to Farm & Fleet..no I dont work there but I will reference it a couple times in this post... I purchased two "steel core" Car Shovels and 1/4" wirelock pins (you always have to make one for you riding buddy!) Here is everything you need.
Step one: Remove the screw that holds the handle into place.
Step two: Drill into that location, thru with a 1/4" drill bit Caution do not drill into the floor!
Step three: Remove handle and deber.
Step four: put together with pin and clean up the mess before your wife comes home!

You would have use that shovel to burry me after doing that job on the wifes hardwood floor. Unless of course your shop looks that good!

Seriously-the funniest part of the whole post is the "deadpan delivery-"Caution: do Not Drill into Floor!"
That, sir, was funny!

Man I wish I had a neat shovel like that. Oh wait, I'm the ridding buddy so I do. LOL His wife wouldn't hurt a hair on his pretty little head. My wife would $hit. Maxdlx
Pic of it mounted on my $15 backpack...Elastic banded to my backpack with aluminum rivets and backer washers!
My wife would just shake her head. Then make me fix it before she gives it up again....

Great Idea, though you should mention “fabricate at own risk” cause I still have the scare from the frying pan she threw at me when I attempted something like that in house…You’re a brave soul, way to take one for the team…LoL

For all the Canucks reading this you can buy the same shovel at
Canadian Tire for under 15 cad. It also mounts pretty easily on the
belt guard over top of your spare belt. It is the one I throw at the
rider who did not bring one. I figure I am doing them a favour by carrying one for them, so they are going to carry one to. Even if I have to provide it.

I laughed out loud when I read that. My wife would do exactly the same thing.
First of all great job with a simple solution, and good to see American ingenuity still alive. It seems to be disappearing in the younger generations as we progress through the internet age where everything is right now and disposable. But that is another topic . . .
You said steel core, does that mean that the plastic blade has steel inside of it. If not how durable is it? In an avalanche situation the snow is not like it is in a stuck situation. It is hard like a plowed snowbank that has set there for a while. Just make sure that if this is your intended use, it will be up to the task ahead of the actual need.

Ding, I got alot of static on the 4 stroke side from the mountain riders and I would say use an all aluminum while riding in the mountains.
This is a good flatlanders shovel. The head is all plastic, the shaft is steel and there is a steel liner in the shove head were the handle goes into it.
I dont ride in areas that have avalanche's. But if I did, I would invest in a survival kit.

Good, sounds like you are already in the know. I am no avalanche expert but am trying to learn as much as I can for our occasional trips to the mountains and the safety of all that I ride with or around. It is a horrible situation to realize that the broken plastic shovel you are holding is now useless to dig out your buddy. I am sure you already have heard a lot of this.
I used to carry a plastic shovel that was made for an emergency in a car. I used it many times to dig out a stuck sled. Sometimes it was even my own sled.
They are great for that. I did have one guy offer me $50 for it (he was getting stuck alot). I should have sold it, but I didn't feel good about taking avantage of his situation so I just dug him out the rest of the day.
Anyway good work!
