Will it be ok to put a little grease around the outside of the mechanical seal so it slides in easier, I screwed one up last night putting it in and only have 2 shots left at it. Thanks for all the help
That is common practice.

It's damn mechanical seal on the water pump
Sorry, have not had to change one yet...I hear it's a b*#&h...what type of sled is it on...anyways...it's alway a good practice to grease up a seal and the shaft it goes on...but for something like a water pump seal I would use good old vasoline...good luck...have you done a search in this forum on the topic yet!!!

Make sure that you use a driver that contacts the seal at the outside edge.

Thanks for all the info guys, I'll try the vasoline. To install it I took a piece of plastic rod and turned it down on the lathe so it only contacts the outer lip. If anyone else has to do it, let me know I'll send out that piece I turned down to put it in cause it sucks to try and get it in there

you need to contact the inner lip also(the one with the spring) i used a 27mm deep socket to catch the lip on the outer seal and used a small shallow socket on the inside of that one to just touch the inside of the other seal. make sure that the inner socket touches just enough to seat the inner seal. this is what i was told to do by a yamaha tech.
seal
I do it similar to how redsnake said.
