is there any downfall to running an open air box on the srx im already jetted cold air intake piped etc.etc.just wanting to get more air in so was thinking of cutting two 2" holes in the top plate of my airbox (under the foam) will it change anything. as i stated above im already jetted rich.............. im doing this to try and help out with the deep powder bog that most all srx700 experience and any other fixes for this if any will help me as well .thanks to all who answer. other than this the sled runs great
So you have the cold air intake and aftermarked canister, still bogs in det powder ?.
I had some major bogging problems last year and now I`ve got an exhaust deflector, cold air kit and bender can, havent had a chance to try it yet though.
Some say the biggest problem with the powder bogging is that the exhaust outlet is being blocked by snow and you get backpressure in the exhaust.
(?)
Or is it air starvation caused by snow buildup in the air vents in the hood?.

yamaha wolf I had a bender cold air kit on my 01 srx and a gutted air box with holes in the top I had to jet up but the thing ran real strong some people claimed it was finicky do the mod but I never had a problem.

thanks for the info.i was sure that it had been done B4 but was just checking,so i went ahead and modded my airbox drilled 8...1" holes in the top and 8 in the restrictor plate cleaned it all up nice put it back together took about (45mins) and went riding and holy SHIQ what a difference it made me wonder why i did not do it when i added the cold air kit ,pipes and delta 2 reeds.NO more bog runs much better on hard pack as well, but in the deep stuff man what a difference, pulls great from start all the way through top picking the skis, now riding in the powder feels like im on hard pack snow love it. No off the line lean pop,no lean pop as i chop the throttle.Did a plug chop and checked plug color nice tan color little on the dark side which is good for me. Better a bit rich than a bit lean thanks agn .gladf i finally joined this site

I know its not really relating to your sled, but if the airbox on a machine is gutted, how many jet sizes would you have to go up to get the right jetting in the machine. And another question, if you were to do this on a machine that runs mainly on lakes and trails would it be worth the modification?? How much power does the mod create?

well i mostly run lakes and trails .i drag my buddies and every now and than enter the drags and it does well there as well... to answer your question depending on what other mods you have on your sled the gutted airbox or air box mod should add around 3 hp on bottom and prob 5 up top, might not sound like much but it adds up. But as you know if you open up the airbox giving your eng more air than you need to do the exhaust so the added air (hp) has somewhere to flow. as said above i run lakes and trails and in my opinion its well worth it i have lots of extras on my sled (which ill post on here later) and my sled runs great and now with the air box modded its even better and yes very noticable both in sound and performance, pull, and powder riding just wish i would have done it long ago ... hope this helps

ya i just drilled 8 1 " holes in the top plate and in the restrictor (plate with 3 ported holes) i left the deviders as ther were all 3 draw air from the top and i saw no benifit to removing them or drilling holes in them .

thanks for the reply wonder if they would help the air flow alittle bit better
Yammawolf, you didn`t by any chance take some pictures of what you did?.
Last year the powder bogging almost made me sell my SRX, did your holes really make a difference?. Maybe I should do it too.. I rarely ride on packed trails, mostly mountain riding with various conditions but most powder.
Glad you sorted it out !

Ya pics of the mod would be really cool, the jet sizes would be good to but your likely running different jets anyways because your sled is piped is it not??

yes my sled is piped ,shaved heads and delts 2 reeds. DG can. with that set up im running mains and pilots 1 size up from stalk and i was still rich so i had no fear of having to rejet with the mod airbox. I left the deviders in as i thought they would help in directing air straight into the carbs anyhow its running great better than ever and the powder riding issue is no more pulls as good in the powder as it does on hard snow.im in love with the sled all over agn ,(i too was prepaired to sell it to buy a powder sled )but not any more.and im glad caus i love my srx and got $$$ invested as it is way more than its worth if sold. after the mod i did do a lean check off the line .NO bog..no pop on fuel chop.and i did a plug chop alls well.today is -38 here today and aprox -45 with the wind chill and colder as you know when your going fast on your sled.anyhow i did another plug chop today at this temp to make sure i was good for the deep freeze my plugs were perfect color still a little dark (rich) so i have no worries... so im very very very happy...and it pulls like a mother fk$r . I recomend this mod to any1 with the srx and the powder bog or even if your not into powder. Now remember this yamaha has always from factory jetted rich with all there machines ,sleds bikes atv's etc. so if i were you i would do the air box mod take it out for a test run and a plug chop ,my guess is that your jetting will still be a bit on the rich side if not 1 size up will do ive modded every yamaha i have ever owned and ive owned lots and usually, with stalk jetting you can get away with air box and pipe mods(im at sea level). as far as pics (my bad) i never thought of taking them but i can. Its easy to describe it as well if interested..............
