has anyone experienced a rattle only at idle in a 1998 600 twin venture with smart carbs or any other YAMAHA with the same engine. its pretty loud when you have the hood up and its idling, but as soon as you take it off idle its gone? is this normal? is it characteristic? what do you guys think?
seems like the 600 vmax i had back in 96 was like it, maybe i am worying over nothing...

any info would be appreciated.

Noise

600 twin I had and a buddies both rattled at idle. Piston skirts are slapping. Nothing to woory about. We had over 10,000 miles on one and 6000 on the other. They sounded the same.

Thats What I Was Thinking, I Have Been Used To Triples Now Since 2000 And Have Not Been Around Twins Alot At All Since I Traded My 96 V Max. That One Had It From Day One If My Memory Serves Me Correctly... What Makes Me Feel A Little Better About It Is When I Take It Just Off Idle It Is Immediatly Gone And The More I Rev It It Is Still Quiet...
Thanks Dude

Now is there a engine torque limiter on this sled model. The reason why I ask I just installed one (torque limiter) on my viper and it does the same sort of thing, a little rasp sound (like someone knocking at a door) and as soon as I give a little rpm it goes away and when it's warmed up it's not there. I backed of the limiter and fired it up it's gone...just a thaught...

There Is 6500 Kms On It. I Dont Think Its Clutching Issues, But You Never Know. I Think Because It Goes Away When I Just Lightly Feather The Throttle, Every Thing Is Ok, Well I Dont Think Its Gonna Blow Up Anyway...
Everyone Thinking The Same As I Am?

is it coming from the clutch side? it certainly has the right mileage to be bushings and it will sound like a rattle at idle

hard to tell, seems more like the engine area, but still hard to tell. i am going riding this weekend so if it blows up i will tow it out with my slightly modified 2002 srx, lol.
it will be fine though... its a YAMAHA...pretty sure its normal...
anyways fellas, thanks for your input, always appreciated.

It's the clutch primary. Take off the moving parts of it.
Now let it idle. I'll bet any amount you hear nothing.
Mine does the same thing. RX1 ER.
The clutch assembly sees the pulse of each piston at the low a speed.
It doesn't even have to be worn out.
The weights are attempting to lift off their stops but rattle instead.

If it was piston slap, your engine would of been junk along time ago.
You'd have to have 30 thou missing from the piston skirts to make that much noise. Not possible.

I agree with SpartaXR because we just went through the same thing with my brothers sled with 4,800 miles. We put my SRX clutch on and the knocking was still there so we pulled the pistons out and checked them and they where .014 and .012 smaller then the jugs! So we put new pistons in and problem solved. Same problem, same sled, same knocking (only at RPM).

This is related mostly to a RX1, with heat shields, but being I stumbled on it last night, maybe there's something to it on the models here. Perhaps not.
It's more of a frequency thing with sheet metal panels unsupported and typical.
Other than clutch noise / But I'm still convinced it's clutch...At Idle

Owners of 2003 and 2004 RX-1 models might experience a rattling or vibrating noise at certain engine RPM levels. These models were fitted with three metal exhaust shields that are not found on the 2005 models. There are two on the lower front and one at the lower rear of the exhaust system. According to Yamaha, these shields may vibrate at certain engine RPM levels and cause a rattling or buzzing sound. All three of these shields can be permanently taken off by removing the attachment rivets that hold them in place. 2005 RX-1s have the shields removed, for this reason, along with a slight weight reduction.
