I've got an '81 SS440, my buddy just fixed up an '80 EX440 and wants to race. any opinions on which sled is faster? it's supposed to snow sunday & monday around here and then we can touch 'em off. :2strokes:

I am going to say the Exciter to.Don't they have just a couple more HP then the SS.I had an Exciter and my cousin the SSR,I always beat him in a race.My Exciter was hitting 93 mph back in them days.

the ex440 was rated @ 48 hp ;the ss440 was rated @ 50 hp by Yamaha. Most importantly it's snowing!!!!!!!!!!!so we hopefully will get enough to ride! :brr

that should be a good race but i would have to put my money on the exciter by a sled length at 500 feet

Exciter should do it, a bit lighter sled than the SS

BUT................

SETUP-CLUTCHING & Driver wieght can make a difference here!!!

Have fun............. put some $$$ on it for fun!!!! :letitsnow

Had Exciters in the early days, 77-79-80-81, all were fun & quick!!!

Funny this Q came up,,two years ago me and my brother was playing
aground on his '83 SS 440 and i had a buds '78 EX440 both running good and strong only ran them then once because i damn near rolled her when i ran out of real-estate....LOL

the hole shots were dead even, and all the way up to about 80mph they
were still about dead even from what i can remember, wish we would have
ran again but i was too busy cleaning my shorts out..:)

both sleds were stock

i think there a close match up..IMO

Exciter will SMOKE YOU ! The SS is not a race sled, more of a trail hog. The Exciter is a much better sled for racing. Heck I used to beat a SS with my 73 GP 433 no problem !!! 76 Exciter ran next to me up till 80 and I was on a 87 Exciter L/C. Been there done that. Have fun !!

we touched 'em off already (see my last post) and my SS is faster by an average of 1 to 2 sled lengths in an 1/8th mile. :bling:
p.s.-Sparta SXR--If you want to race my SS with a GP433 I've got alot of cash to put on that one! :letitsn

I took my 79 exciter for a ride around my house the other day and i was shocked at how fast it was....took me by surprise when the skis came off the ground and it took off like a rocket.

there damn qwick...lol

Watch out for GP-433's! I had one that worked extremely well. Someone put a gigantic Tillotson on it and 2 SS pipes. The only bad thing was the primary clutch was a bit simple and let the engine over rev. I couldn't get it to grip the belt right and it was still quick as hell. I wish I could find one that wasn't crumpled and dented!

My 78' 340 Exciter is quite a surprising creature! It's geared exactly the same as the 440's and just as fast, just not quite as quick.

my parents had matching '77 exciter 440 and 340. I rember my buddies and I would race them flat out. The 340 was quicker off the line till about 40mph. Then they would stay together till around 60 when the 340 started running out of lungs

I am probably going to try drag racing the sled in a stock class, 660 feet. The way I'm grouped is that the 340 fans go with the 250 F/A's. I'm not sure how fair that is but alot of people say the Exciter should be fairly competitive. I have an engagement limit of 5000 rpm and stock clutches only. I'm willing to bet the sled should eat the competition when it starts biting into the secondary. Anyone have a good weight/spring combo to try? I'm not even sure where I can get the old Yamaha springs and weights.

Hey snow Jet, i want to get my ex to leave at about 4500 rpm or so , probly going to try a spring i think that would be a good way im going to try to go up 1 size on the first number of the stock spring and if that doesnt work just put a shim in to bring it up
