Ok, took a look at my Ultimax 2 belt and it has a 1/4 crack under the kevlar cog. It is time to replace and I'm going with a 8DN. The sled is 03 viper, stock except the 53/43 helx and 60 wrap.

Tell me more about washing the belt with soap and water? You just wash and what about a scotch bright to the sides of the belt? I read to break it in the first 50 miles going slow at different speeds?

thanks

All of what you stated above is good practice with a new belt IMO. They do have an ever so slight coating of some nature on them. Also, if broken in properly (Read not WFO runs repeatedly in the first 10 miles) it will extend the belt life.

So when you put a new belt on a machine, your supposed to wash it before hand?? I've heard of going easy on them the first 50 or so miles and no wide open throttle runs but i never heard of washing them. Is there a great benefit to washing the belt before you put it on???

My understanding is, there is a somewhat preservitave/protective coating on them from the factory. This then gets transferred to your clutches, resulting in slippage, resulting in excess heat.......
I've always washed them, but then again, i'm anal so :bump:

I have read this same thing and do it every year with a new belt. I have been using a wire wheel on the edges (very lightly), not a scotch brite pad. -Ed

Scuff the sides of the belt with a stainless wire brush going all the way around 5-6 times. Then wash the belt in hot soapy dishwater and rinse it with hot water. Run them easy for the first 5-10 miles and then drop the hammer and ride it like ya stole it!

I was destroying atleast 1 Dayco belt per mountain trip till I swtch back to Yamaha belts, washing then running for @ 3-5miles EASY!, and the belt I have on now has 3 west trips and will see its fourth in March when I get off (these DAMM) crutches.
