belt slip or ratcheting?

Can't seem to tell what is going on here.If I am on hard packed trail and punch it,I launch about 8100 and wind up to about 8500. Secondary wrapped at 70. Have 8DN belt installed.If I go into a field where the snow is softer and deeper and sled wants to drop down in the front and push snow,I punch it like you would normally to get the speed up and float the ski's.Then I hear this sound,can't tell where it is coming from.I have to back off on the throttle then.Sounds like I am forcing something.What would belt noise sound like if it was slipping or what would track ratcheting sound like if it was slipping.It sounds like it is coming from under the tunnel.Can feel it roughly arond where my feet are.Yet as soon as I get on top of some harder snow and not as deep,I can pin it and she just pulls and I am off again.I can't even describe the sound to ya's.What you think?
 
Had the sled in the heated garage all day.All snow and ice melted off.Track is warm,so I visually checked the track sag.I have 1 1/8" of sag below the slider in the middle approx.Is this to loose of a gap.I'll have to take my spring gauge and pull to desired lbs and then measure the sag again.If I go back to stock specs for this,some say that is to tight.Need a honest opinion of what you guys actually have your track hanging below the slider.Manual says standard track deflection .98-1.18 inches with 22 lbs of pull.
 
1/2" of sag with no force (other than gravity) is the best IMHO. You should have no ratcheting with that tension. I usually use my little finger and the "feeler gauge".

You got to be kidding....1/2" only .I am double that.Can't make it Saturday..sorry.Got a bunch of things I got to do,like going to look at an SRX,a 98 SXR.Got to pu my Yamaha parts on Saturday also..ie,,my speed-0 cable,new belt.Still fine tuning my clutch,nearly have it set right.Now 8100 at launch and a tad off 8500 at wot.Will have to re tighten my track also.Hey Len my Boss at Detail wants to pair your son up with me on jobs so I can teach him things properly.I think he sees some potential there.

If you follow the OEM track tension instructions, I'll bet you have NO free sag when you're done. Try it just to see.

I've always found the 1/2" rule worked great. No ratcheting and minimized the slider wear. Learned it from Gord Gingles of Gord's Motorsports (now Main Motorsports). Gord is a Yamaha guru. He's now a Kawazaki dealer.

My M10 calls for 1" of sag but I think the M10 tightens the track more as it compresses than the ProAction does (also has a full 12" of travel).

Just so you know, Allan has three years of RRC carpentry under his belt. He was working towards becoming a shops teacher and loved the RRC part but really didn't like the UofW academic stuff (Psychology etc. etc.). He knows his stuff pretty well, BUT experience is always a valuable learning tool. I'm sure he'll benefit from your experience and expertise. You never stop learning. He may go back at some part and finish the education, but I know he is enjoying working and living away from home.

You guys need to take some Saturdays off so we can go riding. Allan's Doo is just siting here waiting for someone to ride it. He's too busy.

You'll have to trailer you sled to the 59er some Saturday, so I can intorduce you to the Eastern trails.. There is NOTHING like eating a Smokey cooked on the stove in the warming hut at Mooswa Lake. A beautiful little lake in the middle of no-where just NE of Beausejour.

It sounds like you only need to shave a little weight off of the weights in the primary and you'll be launching at 8200 and creeping up to 8600-8700. Just where you want to be.

Did you get a gram scale yet?

With that much sag i think your too loose, i use 22lbs at 1.5" and never
have any ratcheting, go a head and tight'en it up some and see if it helps..
 
If it's making a growl sound it's either track ratchet or chain slip.

Track should be about an 1 - 1.5 with a slight pull on it. Chain bolt should be finger tight with the jam nut loosened.

yeah I will check all that tonight.Brought sled into heated garage again to defrost.Got my speed-0 cable also.Hey Len,pu 8DN belt from Yamaha and it was $88.11 + taxes.You said WPG Sports was $95 or something to that figure.Will change rivets from 3.6 to 3.1,should help.And no I did not get a scale.
 
Just to let you know before I adjust the track tension what I was running with for tension.If I pull with the scale at 22 lbs like Yamaha says,I get almost 2 " space.Book calls f0r 1 to 1 1/8". I am double now.

2 is not to bad ..i do a 1.5" at 22 on mine..
