I know I have read that some guys have the production numbers for sleds made, do any of you have numbers for the 1981 srx440E? I know of the trade in program and was curious as to how many were built that year and am sure at least 50 percent of them were junked? they were a nightmare for yamaha. An old yamaha dealer here said that they got the sleds on trade in and then smashed the engines with sledge hammers and threw them away, junked the chassis. My serial number on mine is #2168, just curious if any of you have one and how high your serial number is.

Unless things changed over time . The sn changed with # of sleds
produced in the year and not for just one model at a time .
In 75 a GPX might be 30914 and a GP might be 30915 and a TL could
be 30916 and so on ..............I'm looking for production
#'s of the hydraulic sleds myself and would appreciate any info or
clarification on how they counted.

DON, ALOT OF THE INFO THAT DEALER GAVE YA IS CORRECT. I GOT LUCKY, MY 1981 WAS A GREAT SLED. I RACED THE CRAP OUT OF IT AND IT STILL LIVES TODAY. I THINK I SENT YOU ALL THE UPDATES RIGHT FROM YAMAHA IN THEIR 81 TECH MANUAL. THAT SLED WAS A MODERN DAY F-7!! lol. BUT THEY FLRE. MATTER OF FACT THE 8M6 CLUTCH WEIGHTS WERE PAT HAUCKS SET-UP IN HIS 77 SRX WITH THE YAMAHA PRIMARY. ALSO I CAN TELL YA YAMAHA MADE A TON OF 81 SRX,s. I HAVE PRODUCTION NUMBERS. ALSO YOUR RIGHT MOTORS WERE DESTROYED BUT SLED WAS GIV,EN BACK TOO OWNERS, THATS WHY MANY YOU SEE HAVE 78-79 440 ,s SRX MOTORS IN THEM. I HAVE GOOD FRIEND WHO STILL HAS 81 SRX WITH MOTOR NUMBERS THAT MATCH CHASSIS. VERY RARE. 3:16 (tony)

I have number 8m6-00453. Belonged to one of Yammigod's Buddies with original motor. Very nice shape.
Also have 8m6-00441 that I got from Yammigod. Needs total restoration, but has it's original motor.

Mine has 5000 miles so it must have been one of the good ones....LOL
I have the motor out and am completely redoing it just from its sheer age. When I bought it, had a smeared ring but had those cheap kimpex pistons in it, they are also cracked all the way across the top, over the sides to the top of the wrist pin on each side, amazing they dint fall into 2 chunks in the engine!
The waterpump definitely needed attention, was leaking antifreeze into gear case, replaced with all new bearings and seals, wasnt cheap!
I also bought OEM yamaha piston and rings, the rings are legal robbery!!, they are sick priced for 1 ring!!
Tony, I talked to the old dealer and he said once they were traded in they were destroyed, engine and chassis as per yamaha. I even asked him if any old engines/sleds just happend to not make the dumpster pick up...He has been a yamaha dealer since mid 70's, got out of sleds in the 90's here in the big snow state of Ohio...LOL!!!

Oh I have seen em too with other motors in them, Dave Delaughter used to sell conversion kits to run the older 80-76 engines in them when he had his SSR specialties company open. I used to have a 81 like you and I got it to scream, it was very finiky when it came to jetting though, I spent alot of time with gas on my hands changing jets, but it did haul the mail! I went thru 2 sets of cylinders learning that you CAN make ports too big!!!-LOL!!!! ahh yes, the good ol days.

Ya, I had to buy the package deal in order to get them both, I turned around and sold the ss for almost what I bought both of the sleds for, so I am in this SRX for the right price. It is almost perfect shape, the seat was cracked but I got lucky and bought a NOS yamaha seat cover off ebay for $120, it has the original ski's yet, got new ski rubber s from yamaha for them and just need the repo decals from Jon B. The sled has almost all the updates, against the sheets you sent me I found almost every single one done to the sled.
Sleds got a comet 102c clutch on it so I dont have to maintain the yamaha primary, plus theres alot more parts available for the comet. I cant wait to get it out and get her dialed in, should be a fun sled to just keep around and blast up and down the road every once in a snow and just keep an eye on the value it gains as it gets older and older. It is a true one of a kind machine, one year only engine , I am sure yamaha was thankfull for that with 21 service bulletins.....LOL!!
