I have a 96 VMAX 600XT and a 97 VMAX 600XTC and I want to switch over to Synthetic oil. Has anyone had any negative effects when doing this? Do you prefer one brand over another? Thanks!

Its all good, just more money.Amsoil,Klotz,Spectro and BlueMarble just to name a few are all good oils.I really like Amsoil and have run it for years and many, many thousand miles and its never let me down.I don't think any modern synthetic is bad, just find one that you can live with the price and is easy to get locally.
