A friend of mine has a question about gears. He wants to gear his sled for more top end speed and his stock gears are 23/39 (it's a 97 XTC600). What would he need to do? If he put in say a 21 with the 39 does that make you lose top speed? Thanks for the help.

My understanding is taking from the top will give you more power off the line and lose some on the top.....and viceversa....I'm positive about the top gear not really sure the bottom one....and think that if you take or add teeth you might need a diferent chain. Hope that helps a little.

yes, anytime you gear a sled down it'll make the sled slower, but quicker. He'll want to gear up a tooth or two. If you do change gearing, it may require a shorter or longer chain depending on what you do with the gearing.

I think that twin is not going to be much faster than it is now not enough umph to pull a taller gear most people drop the top so it takes off better a quicker sled! Only so much HP there, I do not think that engine will pull the gear in it now! I have a 97 SX600 39/19 & a 97 Sx700 40/20 Thing will fly! I do not run lakes I run trails! The sleds pull hard & trail great!

yup KYSLEDNECK is right, unless he has extensive power-adding mods done to that thing, he probably wont notice much if any gain in top end speed by adding teeth to the top gear or subtracting teeth from the bottom gear. As he said there is only so much power there, and he will find that the clutches will start backshifting before it shifts all the way out because the torque requirement of the driveline will exceed the torque output of the engine. Thus, the torque sensing secondary clutch will begin backshifting while the primary is attempting to upshift.
