I'm going to change the fuel filter on my 02 SRX700 in the next few days, should I replace with an OEM (Yamaha Filter) or will a similar size one purchased at the local auto part store work?
Any tips on changing the filter, I understand its located inside the fuel tank.

I'd replace it with a stock filter if you can get one. The last one I changed on a 98 SRX was a pain. The hose was so brittle and hard I had to take the gromet out of the tank and pull the hose all the way out to change it. I think they shrink over time.

disconnect fitting going into the tank from the outside.Of course disconnect fuel line and pinch or plug it.Tie a string to it long enough. Now get a coat hanger wire and make it straight with a hooked end.Feed it thru the top of tank and grab the filter.Pull it up slowly and out of the tank. While you are doing this, the line with the string will go into tank and out thru top also. The string will come along to.Change the filter, then put hose end back into tank and start pulling at the string to guide it back out of the opening behind tank.Once this is done,re-connect fitting with hose and fasten back to tank.Connect fuel line to fitting and your done. Was a pain, but this worked out good for me.
PS" make that string long, because I dropped the inside gas line to the floor and it pulled my friggin string out of the tank. Now I had a bitch of a time to get that string back on thru. But I can always figure something out in a bind.Second time would be easier.
Of course if your inside hose was long enough and the filter comes out of the gas tank thru the top,you got it made, but mine wouldn't.
