My friend bought a 2003 viper ER with 3800 Canada miles on it. Yesterday he drove it for the first time and I wanted to try it also. I noticed a nasty drive line vibration in it. I switch the drive belt for the other one in his sled and the same vibration was there (I suppose it's possible that both belts could have a burned spot, even though none were visable). In the garage, I pulled his speedo side bearing cover to inspect the drive shaft bearing. It looked a little rusty and is suspect. The vibration is only under hard throttle. Coasting is fine and normal cruising is fine. My question is, can that bearing cause this symptom. I guess with 3800 miles it's not a bad idea to replace it anyway. There was too much snow in the skid to really get a good look at the drive cogs and the inside of the track (which is the nipple track). Any ideas? Doug
make sure the belt is good ... bearing can cause vibration to but more at top speed...

Mine was having the same troubles. Check the chain case side bearings. Especially the driveshaft bearing, thats the one that gave me trouble.

It could some thing as simple as ice and snow build up ! I had a similar problems a few weeks back and saw their was a ton of ice and snow build up in the tunnel that wa hard as cement. After a night in a semie heated garage the problem was solved.

I have also seen this happen.

I dont know exactly what causes it, but rx1yama18's viper did the same thing since new. Always had a real pronounced vibration when under hard acceleration, especially when in deep powder. Now we put in an expert X and it doesn't do it anymore. Did it for 5,000 miles though.
I have had a slight vibration in my srx after I put the 1'' hacksaw on. I had my dealer put new bearings in and still no change.

Are the gears in the chain case the same? Hyvo for Hyvo top and bottom or same type of gear for the top and bottom?
Is the track too loose? Aligned properly?

Check your gears. Mine did this from day one as well, and then the chain case exploded big time. Bottom gear loosened up and fell off, lock-tite and all. New case and chain and no more vibration throught the bars.

If the bearings have rust in them its time for a change anyway. So while you have it all apart for the bearings inspect the gears and chain, and make sure you re-assemble to factory spec. I would bet you cure the vibration.

Thanks for all the replys. I told him we needed to do the bearing, but everyone wants a second guess. Doug

I had the same problem until I changed the stock track to a 9830 camo. I know it sounds strange but the thing is now very smooth.

The other stock Viper that always goes on my UP trip (just this past week) had the same problem last year. He ended up tearing it all down and found the front drivers for the track were all warped and out of round. He put them on a lathe and trued them up and the vibration is now gone.
