so i just installed a new 1 9830 and installed 144 1.175 suts down the middle, on the weekend i had a little off trail accident witch broke and bent about 70 or more studs nit to mention the other damage, so im gona have to remove them, Im thinking of running no studs or 96 instead of 144 will I gain much on top with out studs, from the whieght savings.

Do you have a pic of your pattern? I don't like the way 144 patterns look. I know it's anal, but I love the 96 pattern on my Phazer. Honeslty, I never pin it from the get go, and am easy on rocks and roads, so I was thinking 96 would be enough for me still. I just want that extra grip on ice to I don't fishtail, and a biut more bit off the go.

Looks like a vicious pattern. Who was it from? I think I'd like to do that for mine. I know almost everone on her will say 96 is too few to have in a Viper track.

its a pre punched camo track

Sorry to hear about your damage. Studs look kinda long, might just be the photo. I'd try putting a straight edge across the lugs and measure how far the studs are protruding past the lug. I'd say the minimum that you would want to run would be 120.

I have the same studs and i can tell you stay with the 144 up the middle. Compared with last years stock track (yoko) This thing hooks up like a mother ****** . Since my sled was stolen and recovered i noticed some rubber nubs torn on my predator track and lots of bent studs ! They probaly road on all kinds of crap. If the insurance pays for a new track and studs im thinking of going down one size instead of the 1.175 studs just so theirs less wear and tear on them. But i have to admit my track sure hooked up with the 1.175 studs !

You won't benefit with 144 studs for hooking up out of the hole. 96 is plenty. Think of the bed of nails theory. You have less weight per stud with 144, thus leaving you with less penetration (not that trail studs penetrate much anyways). 144 will only slow you down on top end.....it's alot of weight to turn. Try 96. You'll be surprised. Most people have the misconception that more studs are better.

I dont want to start anything but i completly disagree. you lay on a bed of nails, you dont drag it across the ground. A snowmobile track is completly different your not given equal pressure to each stud when the track is spining.
I have tryed 96 on my sx then went to 144 then 192 and noticed improvemnets. there is a noticable diverence from 96 to 144 down the middle as long as your pattern is good, and the studs dont line up.
I do agree with that more studs equal more wieght but going from 96 to 144 isnt going to be much, and the added hook up and braking evens out.
If 144 wasnt better camo wouldnt make there prepunched tracks 144.

Ok. To each his own. Trail studs do not penetrate, they gouge the ice when you spin the track. More ice pics and chisels make a big difference as they are penetrated all the time. Have you tried running 96 ever? I have had much better results in 1000' and 2000' runs with 96 trail studs than 144 (when I used to run in the trail class). And I'm not talking about hammering it out of the hole like a rookie. That's rolling it on once you get out a bit, just as I do with ice pics. It hooks just as well or better with the 96, and is about 2 mph faster at the end of the trap on average every time. Weight makes a huge difference. You're only looking at 140 hp or so stock. It takes alot of power to turn a few extra pounds, and the extra weight is also making the track balloon out that much more. In 2000', I could never break 123 mph with 144 trail studs. With 96, I ran a best of 125.8 mph in 2000', and was that much further ahead of my competition.
If you find that you hook better with 144, run 144. Mine always worked better with 96, and was certainly faster on top end.
