just picked the sled up this past week.well after i get it home & everything i notice only the brake light works.ok whatever.also notice the head light bulb that was working now doesnt.& i also realized i suddenly had no lights nowhere.(not even a brake light anymore.trace the wires down splice the rub through wires.. put new bulbs in.. they work so i shut the hood & watch the headlight bulb flickering on it own.suddenly poof nothing again.so i check for rub throughs..nothing..i ellimnate everything i dont need now.(heated shield plug),(tether)..try new bulb.it works for about 45 seconds & out it goes.so i thought that it was maybe the voltage regulater getting me to much power to my lights??? bought brand new voltage regulator & $40 more dollars later..it still doing the same thing....can any one out there help me with this lemon before i smash the damn thing.also the sled shuts down on it's own just crusing down the trail..like it looses spark...but it starts right back up with out any hesitation..but i forgot to mention that the sled runs when the lights dont work.

some have mentioned a wire routing under the engine that wears through and shorts.

If the sleds running fine and the lights aren't working then it sounds like it might be the load control relay... I had the same problem with mine and mrviper700 had told me to take the relays out, put them inside and try and dry them out on a heater to take the moisture out of them. If this doesnt cure the problem, pull the harness from under the engine and look for wires that have rubbed through. Lots of posts on here about harness rub through's do a search and you'll find something for sure.
Hope this helps, good luck

i already pulled the wiring & fixed the rub throughs. it was rubbed & some wires were broke but not all of them.that wasnt the problem but i fixed it already.the lights do work there just getting to much power & blowing the bulbs.(at least that what i think is happening).

pull the harness out from under the engine by the recoil,it will be chaffed.
Simply unhook the harness up at hood hinge, tie a string on the plug ends, now squeeze your hand between the pipes and undo the little bend over clamps on harness in front of motor. Now go over to recoil area, unhook plasitc tie clamps, and pull the harness up and out of the sled, you will see the part that goes under the motor will be worn thru on a few wires. tape each wire individually, then tape all of them in one harness again, then place them in automotive black plastic condiuit, repull the harness via your string you tied on to harness.
Ita alot easier to have the airbox out when you do this also.
Theres no load control relay on the 98-99 srxs, this only applies to the 2000-02

don i already did that.wires are all one again.but it still blowing bulbs.put new bulb in & it flickers & poof it's blown bulb again.also when driving down the trail it shuts off all by itself.dont know if the problems are related or not.(both the head light & the tail light blow everytime we replace the bulbs.im stomped here.

if you are blowing bulbs, then the voltage is simply too high.
a "short" would simply not make the bulbs light...... excessive voltage ( and therefore amperage) is what burns bulbs out.
I don't know what controls the voltage though.
so maybe put a voltmeter on to confirm this is the issue

voltage regulator does just htat regulates the voltage in syste, put digital meter on it and see what voltage is when running before and after regulator, you never said blowing bulbs up, you said flickering lights and loss of bulbs
Ramb, if you take a circuit and short and unshort it, its called voltage spikes,it will take out the electrical componets in the circuit....via bulbs!
by the way, on a 98-99 srx theres 2 voltage regulators. one has black and a blue wire, the other has 4 wires, brown/red, black,yellow/red,yellow/white

i'll try to do something with the other regulater but i was thinking maybe when a belt blew sumtime down the road & hit a wire down there or something & has been causing this problem since.maybe thats why i picked it up for 1400$

I dont think a wire can get hurt thru the steel plate they are mounted on behind the footwell brace, but since youll be in there checking the regulators, you might want to unbolt the stuff and check the wiring out, but if its popping the bulbs that quick its got to be the other regulator then, my guess anyways. check it out and see, throw a digital voltmeter on the regulators and see if its above 12-13volts, check before regulator and after to see if its working.

does this happen often on these sleds?i have never had a problem like this on my 2000...also would this cause the motor to shut down driving down the trail?or is this a whole nother problem?
Other components?
Hey Bully.....sounds like Don thinks it is the other voltage regulator. What about the two smoothing capacitors.....could one of them not be doing their job? Maybe you could ask Don. I have an entire wiring harness of a 98 SRX and all the regulators, capacitors, etc. If you want to switch them just let me know. I'll be riding in Forestport this weekend. Maybe we could hook up. You can have it all for a burger and a beer at lunch.

LOL, patience.patience, you need to get a digital voltmeter on it and check the wires before the regulators and after. Electrical problems can and will give you grey hairs, dont ask me how I know...LOL!

could the rectifier be causing the problem.

possible at this point, Matt says hed give you the whole panel off the sled for lunch, I would take him up on that this weekend. At least ya have known good parts to start off with.

sthavent messed around with it in a while but i was thikng about the rectifier, then the condenser thing near the headlight & then a new stater.??? hey matt what happen you never called.i'll ship you a 12 racker man.....(bud light???)
