Will the 8DN belt work on a 98 vmax 600 twin? Stock belt is a 89L. I bought the 8DN today but my local small town dealer told me that the 8DN is for the triples. I do believe the 8DN is the same dimension wise just more superior.Am I right?

return it,stick with the 89L
your sled takes the 89L-17641-01-00 belt

I checked an aftermarket catalog today and it gives the same part number for 98-03 sx,xt,xtc, sxr, mountainmax. I like the 8dn for top cog design to aid in cooling. That is why I bought it.
Although slightly different in width, height and length, the angle is the same. A sled setup for the 89L can usually be adjusted to run the 8DN quite easily. However the 8DN is made with a harder rubber compound so it requires more side pressure to keep it from slipping. The lower hp engines work very well with the 89L, but some do choose to go with the 8DN anyway as it is an incredibly durable belt. Most however, keep the 89L.
I feel that switching to the 8DN from the 89L loses a small amount of belt efficiency, but it is hard to notice it without a dyno.

Thanks Ding...that is the explaination I was looking for. I think I will return the 8DN and save my twenty bucks and get the 89L.
Thank you all for your input.

That will be true if your sled is setup to run the 89L. You could set it up to run the 8DN as well, but there really isn't any good reason. The 89L is cheaper, and its softer so it grips better.
