Looking for ideas on what could cause the electrical problems I've been having. Last winter it left me set on the trail for a while (with no spark all 3 cyliders) and then couple hours later started and ran for 2 days and quit again. Local Yamaha dealer looked at it and said it was a bad CDI, so I put a new one on this yr and about 40 miles (and 2 months) later there is no spark again. Brought it to another Yamaha dealer and they say bad CDI again. Looking for any suggestions to try before putting another new CDI on again. Seems very rare to me that I would go through 2 CDI's in one yr. Second dealer also says everything looks good electrically, suggests another CDI.

Stator most likely. But the first thing i would check before going and buying one of those is the main wiring harness. It goes from by the brake down under the engine and across to the pto side of the sled and then up the hood to the gauge pod and headlight. Very often they rub through under the engine causing a short and all kinds of weird behavior. Do a search on wire harness and you will find a crapload of info. If that checks out ok and you get all the wires individually wrapped and in wire convolute, i would definately check out the stator. There are continuity tests for them, but often they are hard to check because they only act up sometimes (as you described). May just have to get a new stator and try it.

do you have a digital multi meter?
To diagnose a problem, you must start at the start of the system and work out till you find the culprit, I have never been a fan of just buying parts till you get spark again, waste of money and its strictly a hit and miss kinda ordeal.
