Anything I can adjust to tame a severe darting problem on my XT with steel skiis.

Besides shimming if that is possible with the TSS front Hmm?
I'd try a set of the Dual bar runners some people like them but they are $$. Also make sure your alignment is correct. You should have about 1/2" toe in. Make sure your links are all tight as well. I remember on my Exciter when the joints on the spindles work out it was like you had to constantly correct just to go straight.
FWIW I love my new C&A's certainly worth the cash.

How and where do you measure the toe in? The ski seems to have a taper to it.
You guys were spot on with the bushing comment, the aluminum mount on the pogo has a bunch of play in it. So does the center mount steering link. I will take advice and rebushing all.
How do you align the track? I will search tech section but will take advice if someone has done it.
I want a Viper, that will solve my problem wont it

Easy fix is buy some plastics skis, I did that and seemed to fix my problem.

Can you adjust the ski pressure on that sled? If so, you could try adjusting it so that you have less ski pressure. That will reduce darting.

Ok aligning is pretty easy. I can't remember exactly where the adjustment is on the TSS type fronts but I think it is on the tie rod.
Ya tightening up the bushings will make a great deal of difference in the slop you need to overcome to move the ski's. By far your best bet for eliminating darting is get better ski's. You should still do the alignment either way as well as fix the joints and bushings.
No the 700 Viper ER my Dad has darted when he got it. He kept the stock "Blue" ski's and added woody's dual runner wearbars. And we made sure the alignment was good. We also have 3 different Polaris sleds and all of them have been checked. My Mom's 500 classic does not dart anymore. It used to badly but now it is straight as an arrow.
You can let down the front of the rear skid a bit but don't go overboard or you will push in the corners which is even less fun than darting. If your ski's are tapered then a measuring tape and some masking tape are needed. Measure near the front of your ski and divide the width in half. Put a piece of tape on it and mark the centerline. Repeat for the back of that ski and the other ski. Not take a long straight edge. 6 foot or 8 foot is best. Place it along the track's edge (make sure your track is straight on the skid first) put a few pieces of masking tape along the inside edge of the straight edge. Repeat for the other side of the track. Measure between the tape and you should get 15 inches. Place another piece of tape at the center point between the tape (should be 7 1/2 inches in from the edge). Now you have your ski and track centerlines. Measure the distance between the rear of each of the ski's to the centerline. Then measure between the front ski centerline to the track centerline. The distance should be about 1/4" or so smaller for the front measurement for each side for a total of 1/2" toe in.

My '95 Vmax darted like crazy until I shimmed the ski's, that solved the problem. Cheap fix, didn't cost me a penny. Might as well try it before you go out and spend big $ on new ski's or dual runner wear bars.

By the way BeTheViper wrote up a good article about alignment at

Yep got the hitch on the dx - thanks for the great deal! but still looking for the Crank case cover. It was damaged when the guy I bought it from melted down the piston and rod shot through the block taking out the outer case when it pounded the starter off (I already found a good 600 motor). You think he would have shut it down but oh well a 2 up 600 for $450 with only 600 miles on it is worth a summer project. I am going to use it to pull my fishtrap guide ice shanty around. I have been stealing parts though to keep my XT running till summer.
I still want a VIPER!
My poor little 600 XT got blown off the trails this weekend! Those new sleds haul ***!
