Could have been a bad bearing. A buddy on mine had a bearing go on his F7 and the shaft was spinning inside the bearing. Wore the shaft thin and then it broke right off.

I snapped one on my 98 about 3 years ago. I did notice a vibration getting worse that whole day before it broke. I sat at a bar for 9 hours waiting for the group to return with the trailer. It was the day the space shuttle blew up. I have the video of burned into mine brain after watching it for 9 hours straight. I really never came to a conclusion as to why it snapped, but did replace the bearing on that side with the new jack shaft.
Well The Guard On The Oil Line That Go To The Motor If It Touch The Shaft It Will Cut It Will Alots Of Miles

my buddies wife's sled snapped hers on there 99 600 SX just behind the secondary ,right even with the bearing, no other damage. thank God she was smart enough to hit the kill switch as soon as she heard something funny. we just had to pull her back a couple of miles to the motel we were staying at. i think this is more common then we might think.
