all weekend when i was riding my buddies viper the sled wouldn't idle it would drop all the way to 500 rpm's then die most of the time unless you gave it gas all the time. the sled ran great once it got past idle. when the rpm's would drop the gauge would go blank and the lights would dim. also when you hit the brakes the lights would dim. what do you think is wrong with it. if i remember reading right some of the sled's with bad stator's had some of these problems. the sled has 2700 miles.

sounds like a chafed wire or bad winding on the stator

any more suggestions

Is this an ER?
If idling the sled at 500rpms, its not gonna supply enuff voltage period to run anyhting, the servo would be wide open, the guage would most likely not recive enuff voltage to function correctly and the lights would be dim.
sure no one has simply turned the idle screw down?

no it is a viper standard. sled was running great when stored last year. taken out this year and this is how it runs. so no nobody turned down the idle screw. what are some thing sthat could cause such a low idle. well i guess it doesn't actually idle it just keeps dropping until it gets to like 500 then it hovers and will only stay running if it has been running for a while otherwisw it will die. but it always starts on the first or second pull. just hard to keep it going most of the time.

well ,the first place would be to take off the carbs then if it hasnt been touched since put away last year and clean them!

what about the spark plugs?
maybe one bad one

not plugs the they have all been changed and had seafoam ran through it

It's likely a carb problem. If you are fouling plugs, your needle valve could be sticking open and flooding. Since it runs fine opened up, it's not a fuel delivery issue.
Did you check TORS line?

Also could be bad gas.

Like stated above, if it was stored with fuel in the carbs, remove and clean them. the jets and passages in these carbs are so small it does not take much to block them............ and you are talking your low end circut, so probably the pilot is partily pluged from setting.

PS - at least you have a nice new cover to cover your broken Viper untill you fix it.

I'm no mechanic, but I'd just turn the idle screw to see if that worked. My little bro does it on his POS Arctic Cat jag all the time to keep it at idle depending on how it's running on any given day. Colder/warmer.

it's not a carb problem. we've ran 3 cans of seafoam through it. not bad gas as it has had about 5 tanks ran through it. it is also not the idle scre either.what is the tors and how do i check if it is working right. also it is only idling on two cylinders i think but if you put the choke on it will idle on all three. also when you are running it it runs on all three.

1) clean carbs (or you'll end up cooking a piston)
2) change plugs. (i bet your not actually firing on one of the cylinders...check to see if the exhaust manifolds on each cylinder is hot when running)

Ok, so you post a problem ,you are given answers and you dont believe any of them, nothings been done to the sled since sitting all year, and you dont think its the problem? I dont care if you run a case of seafoam thru it, if the pilot jet has a obstruction in it, it wont idle! The choke lever being applied and idling on all 3 is your clue...CLEAN THE CARBS!!!!!!!

ok i am sorry i am just frustrated with this sled and my sled blowing up and on top of it all my dad's sled just broke the crank in half last night. it's been kind of hectic and i am just really stressed. i will tell him to clean the carbs. however it is not a sparkplug issue. i am just curious but why would it run on all three at higher speeds if the choke isn't on. but it will only run on two if the choke is off at low speeds and idle.

Because the idle circuit of carb is plugged...take carbs off and clean, or park it with the rest of the broken sleds, because your going to melt the piston.

Your pilots are plugged. Thus no fuel on the low speed/idle circut. By flipping the choke(it's an enrichment jet) you are giving it enough fuel to run. At higher rpm it comes on the needles and mains so then it has the fuel it needs to run as the faulty circut is no longer being used.

Very well said.
