Picked up a '99 SRX with 1400 miles on it this fall. Was out for the first real ride & did 120 miles in so-so conditions. A few ?'s came up. First, is there a way to diconnect the thumb warmer??? Too f'en hot while hands were cold(ish). Will be adding hand gaurds for sure. Is it a simple matter of just unpluging something hopefully? Related topic--the windshield, too low for me. What's a decent one with good coverage. I'm not a young pup anymore & don't care about looking cool with the low slung deal. I want coverage. I wear a snowcross style helmet. It was never an issue with my old cat, but with the SRX, airflow is directly at my face causing leaks at speed around the goggles. Third is hooking up. It has a stock track with 144 down the middle. I can't afford to replace the track anytime soon, so that's out for now. I'm favoring low/mid range play vs top end right now. As far as the suspension set up goes I have the FRA to soft. Limiter straps to their longest setting ( according to manual). The rear preload is 12.20 inches (factory stock). The front preload is 7.20 inches (factory stock). I haven't checked the ski suspension. I weigh 170lbs. Should the front/rear preload be messed with??? I realize cornering will suffer with some of these changes. Can that be made up with ski shock adjustment? Thanks for any info.--FRO

First off, are you hand warmers working at all? The hand warmers are in parallel with the thumb so if the hands warmers aren't working the thumb warmer will get WAY hot and burn like hell. So the first thing would be to see if the hand warmers are in fact working or not. Second, setup your rear suspension for a 50/50 or 60/40 (more to the top side) control rod gap. Use the rear preload to control this adjustment. I like to run a moderate amount of center spring preload for good traction, but not too much that you take away from the awesome bite of the front end. Set the FRA for your riding style. Depending on what you weigh, you will probably find the softest setting to be too soft, not enough dampening. Most run them on medium. But as i said, it really depends on your weight and riding style. Make sure all the bushings are right in the rear skid and grease it often. Also make sure the front end bushings are tight. Clean your powervalves and get them adjusted. Also tell us what you are revving at for WOT all the way from a standstill to top end and we can go from there on clutching. As for windshields, cobra makes really good ones with the flares to keep your hands warmer. Yamaha also makes some too, look at yamaha-motor.com and go to accessories or go to your dealer. Personally i would go with a cobra. Great sleds, you should really like it. Hope that gets you started in the right direction. :2strokes:

On 98-2000 hand warmers and thumb warmers are contrled by same knob, on 01 & 02 have knob for thumb & hand. I put a 25ohm reostat next to the other one and split the circuits and got a face plate sticker for a 01, is a different color but I don't burn my thumb any more. The windshield about any single headlight shield will work. Might check ebay see them for like a vmax dlx for a decent price. Just my 2cents but the best mod I have done is long travel the rear and raise the front with brackets. Good luck, are great sleds.
