I'm thinking about putting a 151" track on my MM 700. I was talking to one dealer and he said I would need to install the Yamaha hardened drive axle. Price - $100. He said the stock one on the 97-99 MM 700 was weak and people have had problems with them breaking turning heavier tracks. Is this ligit or is he just upselling? Does anyone know of anyone else that has broken their drive axle?

I broke 3. He is right. Do not use the axle 97-99 axle. I can't remember which is which but one has a 45 degree chamfer cut on the speedo end of the axle and one has a groove machined into it. Once I got the right one I had no more problems.

Wow, I had no idea. You wouldn't think something that thick would just break. Maybe I ought to put more thought into replacing mine when I throw a longer track on.
Did the broken axle take any other parts with it? How extensive was the damage?

It cost me a chaincase each time. The axle caused the bearing in the chaincase to twist and break the case. Also, the extravert drivers got really chewed up so I replaced them. Expensive lessons and apperently I'm a slow learner. Had several axles from the 1997 mm 2" track conversion so I used them. They all failed in about the same place.
