Well my friend Mike is bring his '93 380 Doo over to my garage to see what I can do for him. Basically it has been stored for the past few years and need it all looked it. I don't know where to even start besides the obvious. But if it saves him $200 maybe it's worth it.

Got any pointers?

Only good news is his sled is primarily red in color.

That engine is about the simplest design that there is. It is a piston port axial fan cooled engine.

Also SkiDoo engineering in that era was very simple and straightforward. You can completely tear them down in a matter of minutes.

If you need tech info I likely have some in electronic format, or you can go to www.dootalk.com where there is a wealth of knowledge.

Compression test, total cleaning of the carb ,look over all lines check skid
action ,track, you'll figure it out fuzz..LOL

I got too in the sho right now.On some of the odels when you pull the fuel lines off the carbs there is a small filter in the line make shure it's not plugged.

Ryan, you are starting to talk like Rich now . . .

You are not going to demonstrate the secret handshake next are you ? ? ?

It is a sled in need of a check-up. No real maintenance in the past 5 years or more. The carbs are where I plan on spending the most time. I was going to inspect the sliders and wear bars and recommend what ever is needed. I figure I'll do a compression check and inspection. It was a good running sled just think the carbs are plugged up and the gas is real old. It would be nice to have a tach but the sled only has a speedo so I'll have to set idle by ear.

Ya first step was to be done today and I ran out of time/energy to complete that task. I picked up some more lighting for my garage and was going to pick it up some but my 19 month old wanted to do other things.

My first sled was an 89 ski doo 377 and that thing ran every year with no maint. We stripped it last year after the motor mounts broke but it was a great sled and it would go an indicated 55 mph. A ski doo dealer told me to be sure to inspect the belt that powers the cooling fan. I still have the motor if you need it.

Well all went well. The carbs were round slides so I had to try and remember everything I know about them but put in the back of my noodle for safe keeping. The Doo's ahve that primer circuit that was interesting. The oil is injected in the motor instead of mixed with the gas. So when I removed the float bowl on the first carb I saw regular stale fuel varnish. No big deal. 20 minutes and it was good as new. The second bowl however was completely covered in green goo. It is amazing how dirty a set of carbs can get without being cleaned since '93 or '94.

One thing that is odd. I took a look at the plugs and one side is running perfect color the other is quite rich. After the carb cleaning I noticed a Air screw is missing. It is a large diameter screw that blocks an air jet at the carb throat. That cylinder is a bit rich. I'll need to hunt down a replacement. The spare belt is dry rotted. Everything else looks pretty good for a '92 with 3500km. Only think I don't like is the engagement RPM is a bit low to my ear (there is no tach) but the owner says that is the way it has always been. It also sounds a bit odd when it is running but that too is normal. Maybe there is no insulation left in the muffler or I am so used to bigger bore L/C twins.

Good thing that is a light sled. We had to lift it back into a new full sized Dodge Ram 4x4. The tailgate was piched up a bit cause it was on my driveway to the total lift height was about 4 feet. Got it on the first try though.

Stupid me forgot to do that and he was running a bit late and needed to get the Truck back (he borrowed it) to Marysville before it got too late. I thought about it when I had the carb's off but did not want to do it then.

He called me a little while ago and said that he took it for a scoot down the street a few times and "it screams". Nice to hear its running better and he likes it. Before it would run at idle fine but anything past closed throttle it would just die. Since everything was plugged I can see why.

Funniest thing I saw was the size of the main jets. I didn't think they came in sizes that small. I tried to read it but could not make out the numbers. One main and both pilots were plugged solid and the primer circuit plunger would not pull a vacuum before he cleaned the piston.

I should also mention we removed 4 1/2 gal of 5 year old gas from the tank. Added 5 gal new 87 oct. plus a dose of Stabil per directions and 2 ounces of Lucas fuel system cleaner.

I stressed the fact that putting it away wet and dirty is very bad, Not just for fuel but the motor needs fogging and the lub points need that old used grease pushed out so that parts don't rust. Next time it's over I'm relubing all the bogie wheel bearings. That is the only thing I did not do. I checked them but they were ok. Not dry but certianly not full of grease either.
