Each of the exhaust pipes have a brass nut screwed into the top of the pipes just after they are connected to the manifolds. What are they for.I ask this because today one of them unscrewed and poped of the pipe. Now I have an open 3/8" hole in the pipe where exhaust shoots out of.Searched the whole engine compartment for this nut with a magnetic bendable shaft with LED light at the tip.Got it under and around everything in there, but could not find the damn thing.Looked up Yamaha parts in the exhaust section and it does not show these nuts in the pics of the pipes. How would I plug this opening.Tried and jambed in a wooden cedar shim in the hole, but it popped out.

Someone had an EGT sensor setup on that sled before you owned it. If possible, take the pipes over to some type of welder if possible and put a weld over those to close them up so they don't leak at all.

I didn't think so either... sounds like there were some EGT's in those pipes like Daman said... you could just weld it up. I would take a small peice of aluminum, bend it to the radius of the pipe and stick it on the inside of the pipe where the hole is, then take a Mig or an Arc welder (which ever you have access to) and fill in the whole. The aluminum will stop the weld puddle from sinking to the inside of the pipe and will not stick (ever slightly) to the weld when it's cooled as it can't fuse to the steel.
Then if you want to get real anal just take the meat of the weld off with a grinder and then use a flap wheel or sanding pad to buff it out and re-paint.
Just an idea for ya... there are plenty of easier ways to fix that but this is the way I would do it.

But it is weird. The piece that comes up from the pipe is threaded.about 3/8" high.A nice clean look to it as if from factory.

Y00.Someone did weld them threads on the pipes.Well I got a piece of 3/4" brass solid bar,got from work(the bar we use when we re-key locks..it pushes the cylinders out and holds the top pins of lock in place)and drilled and tapped the end same size as the other nuts.Cut a length of 3/4" off on my power hacksaw...grinded it down smooth and used that.Took the other ones off and used red loctite and screwed all 3 back into place. After 75 miles they are still on.Also the new exhaust donuts are holding up great..no leaks present.
