A friend of mine has a 1991 venture it seems as if the primary clutch is not working the way it should. When he pulls the chord to start it, it seems the clutch is already grabbed on the belt and the sled moves ahead about 1' and when he uses the electric start the sled will do the same. Anyone know what could cause this?

Remove the washers behind the secondary, try a search on it if you don't

Does this help,

Check alignment and motor mounts first. then adjust belt deflection.
On another note does the primary clutch open far enough (when stopped) to let the belt drop all the way to the bottom of the clutch sheaves without grabbing the sides. If not the clutch spring may be broken or weak, or the bushings may be binding.
