My Vmax has always used a lot of oil. Recently I figured out the consumption rate and it was running at 32:1 fuel / oil mix. Does anybody have info on what the ideal fuel / oil mix is? I couldn't find anything in my service manual, but it seems to me that it should be more like 50:1.

Yes, 50:1 seems more like it, but I have'nt heard of it put in those terms on newer sleds.I thought mine was using alot also, about 90-110 miles per quart. My dealer and others on this forum seem to think thats about normal. How many miles can you go on a quart?

Gas milage varies from 10 - 13 depending on snow and temp. So figuring an average of 11.5 MPG:
32:1 would be 90 miles per qt
50:1 would be 143 miles per qt

Do you...1# have your throttle end play set to 2mm,,and 2# oil cable
adjusted to 21mm????
adjusted to 21mm????

Oil cable is set to speck.
I have not checked throttle cable end play. I'll have a look at that.
It just seems to me that the real objective should be a specific fuel/oil ratio - same as it would be when running a pre-mix engine. So I was thinking - use the oil cable adjustment as a starting point - then tweak for proper mixture by monitoring fuel and oil consumption.

Well if you want to shoot for 50:1 you need to burn a quart of oil per tank of fuel(10-12gals)Old Thumper said:It just seems to me that the real objective should be a specific fuel/oil ratio - same as it would be when running a pre-mix engine. 1 gal = 128 oz. 1 qt = 32 oz.
10 gal = 1280 oz
If you want 50:1, then 1280/50 = 26. You should burn 26 oz of oil per 1280 oz (10 gal) of gas.
26/32 = .8 -- 26 oz = 80% of a quart.
If you burn exactly 1 quart of oil per tank of gas, you're running 40:1 fuelil ratio. (1280/32 = 40) 40:1 is "richer" than 50:1.
1 qt = .95 liter.
that will get ya close at least
but like i said idle and throttle end play MUST be set first,it's more
important than you think..

oil is still cheaper than engine rebuilds, if its running good and oil consumption is your only concern just leave it be.
your riding style also has a huge affect on your oil consumption. these triples use oil not only for lubrication but to help cool down the engine at high rpm. if you ride her to the pin all day or get into the powder shes gonna drink alot more oil than a leisurly trail ride.

Ok - I did have excess play in the throttle cable. That makes sense - cause the throttle cable being loose would have the same affect as the oil cable being too tight.
Thanks Daman.

I have it adjusted properly - I'll see what I'm getting for a fuel/oil ratio now.

Thanks Daman.![]()

when you have excess play in the throttle cable it's pulling your oil pump
open(feeding more oil) when not needed...hope it gets better..

Went on a good ride Sunday after adjusting both cables. I put on 158 miles, used about 14 gallons of gas, and used 36 oz of oil. Fuel / oil ratio figures out to exactly 50:1
Nice!

I'm at 21.5 on oil cable and 1.5 on throttle.
I had one ride this year where I got 13 mpg - it was cold (around zero) and the trails were just groomed and set up hard.
Sunday it was up around 30, snow was softer and some trails were pretty bumpy.

I agree, my sled is a pig on oil but I would much rather pack a couple extra quarts of oil then a new piston so I say drink up.

Thumper, thats about the same mileage that I get, when I'm running trails and not gettting after it too much.My mileage is much worse when boondocking and playing in the deep powder, 10 mpg.
