Oh well, first part of the HC tuning is done.
22/38 gearing, 4,(something) grams in heel and 3,3 in tip.
Results: Had to grind the small washers that go on the heel bolt so they won't contact the roller. Yes they are 15,6 OD and yes I tried to push the washers away from it, still would contact the roller.
Ok, so far so good.
Set the 47/42 or something like it at 70 degrees with a green spring.
Sled has a 1,25 ripsaw track.
RPMs were 8500ish. 8500 at takeoff then 8300 then 8500 again.
Top speed of the day: 100 mph on speedo. Ok the conditions were not great but not too shabby either, normal trail on the river...

well first off the helix is likely wrong, you dont know what it is by the sounds of it. h/c's you need something like a 50/38,50/36,50/40 in a srx, then you will be using around 4-5 grams heel weight and 5-6 grams plus in the tip, you want alot of tip weight for good topend and that requires a very shallow finish angle in the helix.
Your not laoding the engine hard enuff if it spins right to 8500rpm, you want like 81-8200 and let it build rpm on the way to shiftout. srx's like to be overloaded and tractor thier way up to rpm.

DUDE, YOUR TOO LITE IN TIP LIKE DON SAYS. SURPRIZED YOUR NOT RUNNING HIGHER RPM. 3:16 (tony)
No power???
Tony, that was my same reaction. I started reading the post just to see how this set up compared to mine. Don has done some (or maybe a lot of) porting on mine. I am running the long bolt and six washers in the heel and 6 grams in the tip (long bolt and two lock washers). 50/40 Dalton helix with a green spring at 60. When the traction is poor it will spin and rev quite a bit. When the ground is hard.....look out. Don's right, these motors like to be grunted. Way different than my big bore Viper. Feels like more torque.....and the HC's work WAY better with this motor. Have not seen a sled yet that even comes close......but no real big iron yet. Closest sled so far is a very good running Attack with an Excell pipe and an Ulmer clutch kit. Good race but the jump I get out of the hole can not be overcome.

MATT, I WAS BULL HEADED ON ANYTHING BUT 8BU. DON, ALLAN, AND MIKE (turk) FINALLY TALKED ME INTO AT LEAST TRYING HEEL CLICKERS IN MY 2000 SRX. I SWITCHED OVER RIGHT AT THE END OF GRASS RACING SEASON THIS PAST YEAR. I,LL TELL YA HOW GREAT THEY WORK FOR ME, IT TOTALLY KNOCK MY SUSPENPSION SET-UP OFF TOO THE POINT I COULD NOT EVEN RIDE THE SLED. ON A HRAD STARTING LINE LINE ROCK HARD ICE OR CLAY, FORGET IT. I BEEN RACING THIS SLED IN 660 ON ICE. SUSPENSION TOTALLY REDONE. PROBLEY ONLY SLED THAT CAN GIVE ME TROUBLE ARE GOOD RACED PREPED F-7,s. I WILL BE BUILDING ANOTHER HC SET-UP FOR MY 2002 AND EVENTUALLY GET THEM IN MY VMAX 800. THEIR UNREAL. 3:16 (tony)

Which HC weights are you guys using? - aren't there two or three different ones?
Which ones
If you were buying them from HC today I believe they would be 40-10BY. There have been different versions through the years from 40-10 on up. They are definately not the "Hammertimes". AKA "paperweights".

I had an older set in one of my SRX's a few years back when they first came out and I never got them to pull on top - did have alot of bottom grunt though - I might try them again - where is the best place to get them?

So would this be a good starting point;
40-10YB
4-5 in heel
5-6 in tip
50-40 Dalton
Green spring at 70
Red primary spring?

Are you using a Dalton helix Tony? - I'll let you know how it works out!!

Helix
I first tried mine with a 51-37 helix but I couldn't fit enough weight in the tip to keep the RPMs down so I went to the 50-40 which was the next closest thing I had.

Yammiman, youll be real close with that, red primary spring, try 4-5 grams tip with the 50/40.
Matts is making a couple more hp then the average srx is. So he will need a slightly bigger finish angle to load the motor more, a std srx will be a little less in the weight and angle change in the helix.

Cool - are those Dalton helix's or doesn't it matter? - there is a little voice in my head that someone said Dalton's cut's are a little different than other brands!
