sx 700 break'n down?

stator is off

I "popped" the stator out yesterday afternoon and it looks like it is in fine shape (i was hoping to find a smok'n gun but didn't). It did have some small cracks in the tan goopy stuff used to hold the wires, is this a problem? The final resistance test was done at 68 degrees and the best reading I could get was 89 ohm out of the brown\red and black wires. Spec calls for a min 93. I'm sure what else I can do excpet to start replacing everything until the probelm goes away.

Is there a way to test the CDI box or is this low reading on the stator the problem? :o|

I'd say the low stator reading could be the smoker...

CDI's rarly go bad...

I think, like almost ALL other 97 SX 700's with this problem, that it is your stator. And the problem is very intermittent at first so it can be hard to detect with a meter because sometimes it will act up and other times not. Try finding a used one from a 98-2000 on the site.

Not the stator

Well, changed the stator, no difference, tried a new CDI box, no difference. Could it be reeds?, need help and a new direction.

i know you said you had checked the wire harness but have you removed it from the sled and checked it throughly. and then cover it to protect rub through.

wire harness

I checked the wire harness thoroughly, pulled it out, checked the wires, rewrapped, and replaced. I ready to dive backinot the carbs, dirty fuel inlet valve? I'm grasp'n at straws here ! I did check the boots and two tested badly, replaced all three, could one of the ignition coils be bad at a specific rpm?, they tested out ok.:o|

Sorry I didn't read all the posts but I had to replace the TPS switch on mine. Don't remember exactly what was happening. Try bypassing. Just a thought.

Friend of mine thought muffler might be clogged, checked and it seems clear. The reeds seem fine, nothing broken or cracked. Does any one know how to bypass the TPS switch?

700 do not have a tps switch. Only the 600twins. That is if tps is throttle position switch. If he is talking tors just unplug it.

TORS (throttle over ride switch) will cause a nasty miss and try to limit rpms to 3000. Maybe it could cause a wierd high rpm miss but I have never exprienced that kind of failure.

I was told after unplugging the TORS to plug the two wires together that come out of the harness. Does this need to be done?

I just wanted to drop a line on my "missfire problem". I went through it. Rebuilt the topend, rings, etc. Did the stopper notch mod, that was fun!. The motor and carbs are "Clean, Clean". This thing looks new! Compression -- 130, 129, 129. Everyhting looks so good, came apart and went together nicely. Did it work ------- Don't know, I'll report next season. Have Fun.

A 97 700 sx doesn't have a tps switch it has a tors switch. You bypass it by finding the 2 wires on the right side end of the carbs sitting on the seat. Unplug the wires from the carbs and plug the ones going back up to the bars into each other. Maxdlx
