Took the old V-max to the Butcher Shop last week to get the primary off. They had to bust it up and grind it off! The first 6 or 7 threads on the crankshaft are now stripped. I'm pretty sure they used the wrong size tap.
I ended up just getting it the heck out of there! Any ideas on what to do now??? Here's what I'm thinking:
1. Try the right size tap and get lucky
2. Grind down the bad threads to get to the good ones
3. Part it out ( I hope it doesn't come to this!)
This machine is in great shape and runs strong so I'd hate to part it out.
Thanks, FishX65

Take your new clutch down there and ask them to put it on for you.

They should be able to put in a Heli Coil . If it is an vmax 540 then it is a UNF 1/2" they are pretty standard .Any machine shop should be able to do it for you.

Helicoil sounds like it might work but how can a machine shop get it to go in straight if the crank is still in the machine? I found out that the threads are 12mm with a 1.25 pitch so I'm gonna see if the right tap will work. I think it would be a waste of time trying to get the shop to fix it. It was just some small shop that a kid owned. Has anyone else ever had this happen??
its not 12mm 1.25 i just went and done the same thing its defitatly the same as mentioned above 1/2" nf 20.

Thanks guys, it is the 1/2 incher. So I figure the tap did not start straight. Now what??
file off the first couple and get the tap in straight and go slow, you should be able to fix it with the correct tap.

isn't there a lot of threads - so if you drill out the first few ones you should still be able to catch some good threads.
