torque limiter effect on rpm?

2002 viper dialed in as per turks trail performance.....had my rpms perfect at 8600 but recently installed a torque limiter and now see my rpms at 8900-9000.

Is it possible that the torque limiter has had this effect on my rpms, or is this just a coincidence and an indication that something is not right in the clutching?

i was told to align the clutches after by the dealer and others on this forum. check top see if your belt is too tight.

I don't have any facts to back this up - just engineering judgement
but if the rpms were dialed in for a flexing motor mount, and the limiter kept it from doing so ( keeps primary farther away from secondary) then it would make the effective belt length like it is shorter......

Ramb

how easy to unbolt it to verify the effect?

i think i see wher u are going with that but if the limiter were in theory making the belt length shorter, wouldnt the rpm go down? oh boy this is hurting my brain.....
it is not overly difficult to disconnect the limiter but i think im going to try a new belt first. Now that i think about it, It is entirely possible that the rpms were hight prior to the limiter going in(my rides have been far and few between and testing time limited). i will try a new belt and post results.

I was second guessing myself on that too.

1 ) It seems logical that the belt would act shorter.

2) what does that do , is the question. Seems I have read on the board that shorter belts force the belt more into the primary, not the secondary, therefore making it backshift ( or not upshift like normal)
but I don't know that for fact.

you cold just simply be more efficient becasue of proper alignment.

but hopefully someone with some past result will pipe in

when my bolts in the secondary wore down in my sx it would rev up to 9300 all the time, untill i got them fixed it was making my belt to tight. might wanna check those out. have you tryed removing washers and have you removed and inspected the primary and cleaned everything good.

i will check see where the belt sits in the secondary...as far as the primary goes, i wouldnt have a problem eating off it..shes clean..
thanx for the ideas...ill be getting out this weekend to try and figure it out.

ino - I installed one on my machine, no change in clutch RPM. We did however do the alignment at the same time. If I was you I'd get your alignment checked. Not much sense using a torque limiter on something that's not lined up in the first place. Doesn't take long to do, if you have access to the tool.

odd thing is that belt only started squealing after the limiter went on.. if the alignment was off, wouldn't it have squealed before too?......im going to take limter off and see what i get...would a misalignment cause my rpms to be that high?

also......i tried a brand new belt and my rpms still 9000at wot.....my top end sucks.....bottom and mid range still good...i am thinking maybe a primary clutch issue.....

ive taken the torque limiter off and im still getting wot rpms at 9000-9100 and belt still squealing...soooo i guess the torque limiter is not the problem and suspect as one of you said that my alignment is off and probably have some primary tuning to do....

..just wondering if a bad alignment could be causing the high rpms?

which bolts in the secondary are you talking about wearing down?

the bolts on the back of the secondary that have the washeres you add and remove to adjust belt hieght. ON my 97 sx this was so bad my rps would rise to 9100-9000 and my belt would squeal like crazzy, the belt would ware down on the bottom(underside) It aslo discoloured my primary shaft and I believe may be the reason my primary sheeve cracked.

Viperino, You afto align your clutch when you put limiter in! The motor is not aligned straight to begin with so you need the tool to straighten motor(TORQUE FROM ORIGINAL SETUP AND RUBBER MOUNTS MAKES IT STRAIGHT UNDER ACCELERATION) srx tools will be needed. Clean clutches with soap and water and rough them up with 100grit emery cloth not a scotch brite pad. Hope this helps!
