Anyone else had any problems with broken steering stems on 98 srx 700's. The stem broke right below the handlebar plate on the actual circular tube. Should i get it welded, or get a new one?

had mine break on my 98 srx in the exact same spot. i just had mine welded and got the guy to put another peice of steel tubing inside to stiffen it up. havn't had a problem since.

Steering Stem

Yeah this really sucks, it is not to comforting to know that it could have broke when i was drag racing about five minutes earlier doing about a 100.
when it broke i dont know what could would have happened. Will a newer model off a 2001 fit. The part numbers start different one is 8DF and one is 8DG. Thanks

fixing a broken stem

I had the same thing happen to me. I was actually on my brother's '99 MM 700 for the last run of the day up a sizable hill. About 50 feet from the crest the belt broke, caught the speedo cable, and wrapped it around the primary clutch spinning at 9000 RPM. It stopped on a dime! It pitched me off so hard I took the handle bars with me. We had to tow the sled out about ten miles with my brother driving the sled and me towing it. Worked out pretty slick. I took about 8 inches of 3/4" steel pipe and sanded it down really good and hammered it down into the steering column. The 8 inches will get you down below the top steering bearing/support. I left about half an inch above the stock tube and welded around the break and also around the top of the stock tube. I wrapped a leather welding skirt around the column and over the top of the sled and a wet towel as well to catch welding sparks. That way we didn't have to tear he sled apart to fix it. I don't recommend doing this. Your're welding right above the gas tank. If you do so, take extra precaution and do so at your own risk! It worked out really well for us. I can guarantee that it won't break again. It will break the bolts before the column will go again. If you have a '90s sled, I would suggest doing this to yours before it breaks. We were lucky to be in a place where we could get the sled out easily. We would have really been hating it if we were in some deep valley or bowl somewhere. If you have any sort of riser on your sled, a beefed up steering column is a must! The extra leverage a riser gives you places that much extra force on this weak joint.
