My son has my old 98 SRX 700 and we had the power valves services for preseason because they were leaking a little 2 stroke oil on the pipes, My son rode this sled about 220 mile with out any problems the sled ran great, Last weekend he tooking it out and within 10 mile of riding he said it started to run rough so he stopped and was checking things out and the dealer did not torque the cable retainer cap were the cable enteres the power valve because the bolts had fallen out and the whole thing was just hanging there, He got new bolts and put it back together and after about 4 miles of ridding he says he is getting a grinding noise or something like that coming from the side of the motor the power vale problem was on. My question is what do these power valves do and could there have been some damage to the motor or cylinder because this p/v came apart while he was riding. He's 22 yrs old and a pretty smart kid, he did not run it any further when he found the problem, He pulled the belt off and when and got a friend and then each grabbed a ski and draged it to the road (about a mile) any one who may be able answer my question I would greatly appriciate it

the valve can break off leaving the stem in the housing, my friends 700 did this 2 weeks ago the piston almost cut through the valve. he was going 60 at the time and it locked the track up. i dont think he has pulled the engine apart yet so i'm unsure of the real damage. at the time he was out for the weekend, so he pulled the valve reassembled, pulled the head and removed the valve and debris reassemble and kept riding the rest of the weekend.

Wow...... I didnt even know they could break off like that, i always thought they just pulled through at the back. That would definately come with some extremely bad engine damage if itcaught the piston i would imagine. That sucks for sure

Now he tell me that the sled starts great ,once it warms up on a ride about 3 or 4 miles it starts to make some noise, does this sound like a broken valve ?
He is about a hundred miles from home at school so I don't have instant access to check this out that is why I am tring to get this figured out before I head that way on Sat.

i would think that the valve would bind the engine up unless its carboned up and just hangin in there. i think you may need to dig deeper.

Blue, Did you hit something hard with the Nytro to bend the a arm? A little bit of information about the nytro I'll pass onto you, Last year I was riding in the north country and had a great weekend, a couple of day latter I went to remove the the sled from the trailor so I could service it and found a trailor full of oil, I brought it to the dealer and they told me I punched a hole in the oil pan, I could not recall ever hitting anything with it, come to find out I must have slightly tapped one of the bolts that hold the access cover for the oil filter and it punched a hole in the pan. If you do not have a skid plate on yours ,I would right away, and I would remove the attaching bolt that lay's directly below the pan, I got them to cover it under warrenty, If not that job would have cost me 1200.00 I now have a skid plate and one less bolt.
