Hello Fellow Yamahaheads,
First timer hope I can be of some value to someone sometime. I bought
my 1997 Vmax XTC last year and have a couple issues that I hope the
group can help me with. First, I'am getting terrible gas mileage, about 6 miles
to the gallon, so far I have cleaned up the carbs, checked ski's for alignment
the best I could, not that savvy here, plugs abit dark bit machine runs well
no fouling not hard starting, accelerates well,no hesitation, the price of gas
and this usage problem is having an impact on my wallet. Second, the machine darts badly carbides look fairly good and as stated before aligned the
ski's the best I could. Could use some of your expertise on these problems
if you can. Thank All of You in Advance.

First thing would be to verify the needle settings and the pilot/fuel screw settings as they can really mess up your mileage. Next is making sure everything is kosher with the clutches. The yamaha twins are hard on clutch components because of the natural frequencies of the engines, so check the tightness of your bushings, rollers, pins, and quality of the flyweight surfaces. Do this for the primary and secondary. Identify what springs, weights, and helix are in the clutches so we know what kind of clutching you are working with.

yamaholic22,
WOW, lots to digest for a wanabee mechanic, obviously I need to do
alot more research on what I need to know, do not want to bring to
a mechanic if I do not have to.however, might be over my head here.
Again, Thanks

Alot of times the twins of your year come rich, you should check and see what you have for settngs and jets pilots, etc. like holic said, getting
yourself a manual would be great. also track tention will kill milage if to
tight, i have the same sled as you but the '98 i get anywear from 10-12+
but i got'er dialed right in and not heavy on the thumb..

What is the engine compression on your machine?
I did find out this year that the engine compression made a difference on the mpg.

After a ride on the trails, shut her down and see if your clutches are hot or just warm to get an idea if your belt is slipping or pinching too hard. That would rob power too and is easy to do.

Like some have said, if the machine seems to be running good the most likely culprit is the primary clutch. Yamaha sells a primary clutch tune-up kit for around $110.00 that contains everything you need. Wish I would have done mine before the spyder broke!!!!

Hello Again you Yamahaheads,
At work this weekend but will follow through on the clutch details, track
tension, and settings. I bought this, as I said last year and it only has 2600
miles on it so hopefully it won't be a wear issue. Don't know what the oil
to gas ratio is however I believe that the oil is tied into the throttle and by the way because of this, going through lots of oil too. Have to get a gauge and check out compression too, thanks. Will take about a week or so for me to check out but will get back to you. Anything else you gents come up with will be appreciated, hopefully I'll nail this thing down, learn alot and get back to all with a solution. Once again THANKS ALOT

Hello Yamaheads,
Did some checking on a few things today,
1. Checked track tension, looked good.
2. Ran it for awhile felt the clutches for heat, both were just warm.
3. Felt the flyweights, all were free.
4. Looked at the rollers all were round and free.
5. Checked air/fuel setting O.K.
6. Ran the sled on stand, belt coasted well looked free.
Anymore suggestions?
Thanks in Advance once again.

I have not been out for a couple of days. I did check the compression today
