Okay, this is probably back to "basic's" & possibly a dumb question but, am trying to figure what I may have done wrong.

Wifes Sled: 93 Phazer2, was running a bit rough in the "over 6,000"rpm range last weekend.Changed plugs,1 plug looked a bit lean, no change in running, so I figured the carbs needed cleaning as I had not done this yet.She drove it & stayed under the 6000 rpm range & ran okay.

So, yesterday, I pulled the carbs cleaned them & they werent real bad but the one bowl (on the lean plug side) had some "gunk" in it so it was worth doing. Used regular carb cleaner & compressed air to blow all the jets out.Everything looked good to me.

Put back together, etc.etc per service manual etc. Set everything back to how it was when I removed them except for the pilot screws. Set them according to the manual, in to lightly seat, back out 1-1/4 turns.

Fired it up last night & the darn thing sounds "off" idles rough, & just will not get over 4000 rpm.!!! Running "fat", Plugs are wet, did a compression test, 120 for both pistons, all lines are correct, did not change any setting other than the pilot jets. When I removed the carbs & pulled the pilots out, I counted the turns & it was 7.5 to remove. With the manuals settings, it is about 1 full turn different.

Would the pilot jets have this much effect??

If not the pilot jets, what then....... man I have looked it over & replayed everything in my head & cannot figure where I screwed up. Am sure its something simple I have overlooked & am "too far in the woods to see the trees"!!! :o|

Oh yeah one more thing, the TORS is disabled on this sled so that is not a factor!!

I keep wondering about those pilot jets & what they do for the carbs. Darn thing was running pretty good till I screwed with it but had to clean the carbs!! We were going to ride today too, so am a bit bummed!!

Any thouhgts or ideas?? Thx, Rob

You may have the rubber plugs inside the float chambers in the wrong holes. If you do a search here, there is a diagram of the correct placement.

The pilot jets are small brass jets inside the carb. They need to be turned in until tight. The idle mixture screws (not sure what Yamaha calls them) are on top of the carbs and have springs on them. You will have to set those at idle speed until the engine idles the best. Then open the throttle quickly. If there is a bog, turn the screws out until it is eliminated.

To clean the carbs, all the holes should be physically cleaned with small wires or drills.

Hey PZ, funny you should mention the plugs. I watched where they were when I took them out, then to make sure I did it right, I placed them as the manual showed I should & I could swear it was different than what they were when I pulled them down.??? So is the manual wrong or what???? :o|

tried to catcha yammie guy I know but, think he's out riding & I am stuck wondering about those plugs!!! #$%&*

May just tear it down again & place them where I thought they were!!!

Thx for the reply. Rob

Got it running !!!

Tore it down after talking with my Yammie mechanic buddy......
kinda what I suspected.

Got it, had 1 rubber plug in each carb in the wrong location.

Heh....... it looked just like it showed in the darn manual, next time I will go by what I see when I tear down, not by the pics in the manual. :o|

Running great now!!!!!!!!!!

Will go riding tomorrow now, just lost today. Oh well, a good lesson learned!!
