my tach is jumping all around at low rpms and does not work at idle whats up with that

a wire has beginning to rub through possibly.My tach didn't work either when I bought my SRX over a month ago.I checked and had power at the cdi box,but not at the connectors.I went and checked wires the best I could,under engine,under handlebar pad,all along place where the wires are clipped onto the frame,but could not find a problem.So I just hot-wired from the cdi to the wire in the Tach right after the tach plug-in,Bingo Tach now is working.Do some testing and checking the lines.Your problem is just starting,it may soon totally stop working.My 2 cents.

may not be related to your problem, but my tach, fuel gauge and power valves quit working - the metal clip on the small electrical receiver that mounts by the magneto busted of and took out part of the stator. Everything else worked OK. $200 later I'm good to go
