Searched for my specific problem first, just figured Id ask my specific question. 97 SX 700 triple, ran fine on friday went and filled up with gas and greased everything for big trail ride on sunday. Pull it out on sunday start it up and it runs great for 2 seconds and dies. I pull and pull and pull and ... check compression and its 125 in all cylindars cold but i couldn't check warm! And I unplugged my switch and undid all my wiring connections to the coils and cdi and plugged them back in. did the same thing, started for two seconds then just dies. I have fuel getting to the plugs and I can see a spark but only when I hold it near the plug hole it may be weak or I know old Yamahas used to be like that. headlight lights up when I pull. Does this sound like anything in particular? Or where would a guy start. I am coming off a Ski-Doo so I am not real familiar with Yamaha and their set up I used to drive them years ago but much has changed.

bad stator. It is a real common problem on the 97 700's. Get a new stator (can probably find one here on the site in the classifieds) and it will run like new.

thanks, kind of what I was thinking with it just going like that and weak or no spark on any one of the plugs and it running and dying fast. But I thought if the stator went the headlight wouldn't light up when I pulled so I learned something new. Looks like I'll borrow a puller and get on it!
