Hi,

I have an SRX that I want to long travel, and need some advice. I am going to buy some viper shocks, rebuild them and tighten the skid up as per the tech article. I was just wondering what limiter straps do I need, just stock viper ones?? Also what should I be looking at for a price on a set of all 4? I found a set off of a 2002 that I would probably rebuild before I do the install. I was also told that I could possible just long travel the shocks I have in the rear with a kit, does anyone know much about that? I currently have the Ohlins up front, so it will kinda suck to lose them, but I guess the longer travel will more than make up for that. Anyway if anyone has any ideas or suggestions please let me know. Thanks.

i would put the viper rear shocks in and keep the ohlins up front. get the ohlins extensions . this will not give you any more travel up front but will raise your front ride height to more in line with the rear. they are arount $60-$70. i dont think you will need different straps or transfer rods. the 98-99 srx had the long rods.but you will need the thinner control rod spacer for the bottom to get your full travell. what ever the price is it will be well worth it. go for it.

First off, if you are going to long travel the rear i would go with the long travel kit from pioneer performance before buying a set of viper shocks then having to send them out to get rebuilt and revalved for your weight and riding style right away unless you can get them for really cheap. Bruce at pioneer is amazing to deal with and really knows his stuff when it comes to yamaha suspensions. He can get you dialed in with your stock shocks been sticking long rods in them and then revalving them. He also puts a higher rate straight rate springo on the center shock so that it actually works. As for the front, i would keep the ohlins and just get the advant-edge extensions for them, which you can also get from pioneer for about 50 bucks. Also, he will give you everything you need with the long travel kit, including different control rod spacers and i believe the new limiters as well.

I would go with the long travel kit from Pioneer Performance before buying a set of viper shocks also, unless you can get them for really cheap and not have to rebuild them. Bruce is great to deal with and if you let him know all of your info, he will get you set-up right! You will get the longer limiter straps also in the kit. The ohlins with the advant-edge extensions are a great match to the rear.

if i order the smaller control rod bushings for a viper will they be the correct ones?

Also, i know that the 98 srx did not come with adjustable control rods. I bought one used and it had adjustable rods. Will the adjustable rods that are on there now work?

Hi,

So if I can get a set of 4 Viper shocks, and put in new oil and re-pressure them to spec with nitrogen myself, that would be the way to go? And how cheap should they be, thinking of paying around $200-$250 Canadian for the 4, depending on how they go on Ebay. Thanks again for the input.

The front viper shocks will not bolt up to the SRX without switching the top mounts. One has a clevis style mount and the other is an eyelet style mount.

i sell the brackets to do the front shocks

you do need limiter straps for that year.

you do need a 2mm spacer for the lower end of your tranfer rod.

adjustable ones will work, if they are older benders, you dont need to change any spacers, just adjustment.
if it is a newer bender or any other brand you will need the lower spacers.

not sure why people would have you spend 350 to have your shocks lengthend when you can pick up a set of four for less than that. as for the front spring he uses, its just a 2.3 rate spring, you can use one from a front suspension spring with a little grinding inside the bottom of the spring to make it fit over the collar.

stock viper shocks work ok on an srx, not as good as update shocks or revalves but still way better than what you have. most of the problem with the vipers were with the seat.

the ohlins look cool and the chicks dig them but you will ride better with the vipers up front. ohlins are for handling and looks and that is about where it ends. they are sprung stiff and just dont have the travel to stop the trail from hitting you in the arms.
