Hey, I have a 98 700, crank has not been done from what I know. The vibration is from idle all the way up and does get worse at higher rpm. This has gotten worse since beginning of the season when clutched with 8dn20 set-up. all the weights are the same, "x" is lined up, still has good power but vibration is in whole sled, handle bars worst. Motor mounts are tight and engine is lined up. Am I going into the crank problem now? 8000kms on it, never let me down. No other mods to it. Thanks in advance for any more suggestions.

sounds like the crank is getting out of phase, the best way to check it real quick without getting into the engine is put a dial indicator on the crank snout with the primary clutch removed, check it right on the lip where the crank seal rides, if its more then about .006" out, it needs repaired!

I would agree it definetly sounds like the crank is starting to go. One small thing you could check though would be the primary clutch cover bushing. It could be pooched causing vibrations, but this typically only starts to vibrate once the clutch engages and mostly goes away as you get on the gas more.

I would have to agree and definetly think it's the crank from what you are describing.

yup time to get that crank out, get it trued up and welded so that it can't go back out of phase. This was a problem on the '98-'99s.

wasnt that a recall item? A dealer can check your VIN # and see what has been done for you..

if so a dealer should fix it for free... but dont quote me on that

my crank had the same vibration just before it went on my 98. mostly at idle. i'd say if you can get it fixed now cause mine took out 2 bearings with it when it went.

Thanks for the replies, Mr, I checked it right at the end with the clutch off and got .014" on the dial guage. I guess the crank is toast, I can't believe it still did 121 mph 4 weeks ago. I will use the summer to tear into it and see what happens maybe go to a 780 or bigger. Thanks again for the advise. I am going to call Yamaha and see if there is anything that can be done.

Yep, she needs to be straightend and welded, it doesnt mean the crank is junk, this can be done fairly cheap. Its just a labor intensive job to get it out and put back in.

Hi again, I did the check at the seal and got only .004" runout. I am going to try and run this weekend, we'll see how it holds up.
