Morning all...
I have a 2001 Yamaha SRX 700. The last couple times that I have been out, I've noticed that the sled will sometimes only rev up to ~7600 rpms... other times, it'll rev right up to 8200 rpms... this is an annoyance because there is a huge difference in top end between these two rpms... I don't know if this is a primary clutch issue (I bought the sled with clutch work done to it) or if it's an engine issue... It seems to me if it was a clutch issue, wouldn't the sled still try to rev right up? Or is the engine revs limited by clutch engagement?..
I put a new Ultimax XS belt on this year and I wonder if maybe my clutch is out of allignment??...
Anybody have any thoughts on this?!!?... it's currently driving me nuts!!
Thanks gents!

do a search on thr belt issue.but the first thing i would do is get rid of that ultamax belt.it has a very high tendency of slipping in the clutches when warm.and they dont seem to last for very long.most that have tried the ultamax belts have not liked them at all and ,as this post grows you'll see most run the yamaha oem belts without any problems.
My guess is that you have ultamax belt issues just like the rest of us did ,switch ur belt and see what happens

the ultimax will show you lower rpm because its a stickier belt compound, I too would suggest you throw on the a stock 8dn belt and retest, then we can help you fine tune from there. 8200rpm is too low also, you want around 81-8200rpm on the holeshot and let it climb to 8500rpm on topend.
Thanks for the tips... I'll go home tonight and try the stock belt again...
It might be worth mentioning that when I took it in for and anual service - I didn't have time to do myself - I had the carbs and power valves cleaned (and I also had an RX-1 rear suspension put in), and I had the Ultimax XS belt put on... But the guy told me that I may have to shim up the secondary after the belt seats in a little... so I ran for about 100 miles or so, then shimmed up the secondary and now the clutch is making a bit of a squealing sound at idle... think it's shimmed too much or maybe too little??...
Anyhow, I'll put the stock belt on, and take those shims back out and see what happens...

7600 rpms is all I could pull when one of my spark plugs & boot was fouled and not firing on that cylinder. Check the boots for a tight fit and 5K ohms resistance and check to ensure your plugs are not fouled.
(you can always just feel your exhaust to ensure they are all firing well)

When you say sometimes it will rev 7600 and sometimes it'll go to 8200, do you mean the rpms are inconsitent during 1 ride? Or you're riding in different temperatures and conditions and the rpms change? as in two completely different days the rpms are different? The original Yamaha belt will raise rpm and is a more durable belt. Like others have said try swapping that first, then check and see what it does and then report back.
use stock yami belt absolute best belt to run
Afternoon boys...
Well... I just went out and took that Ultimax XS belt off and put on the old Ultimax3 ( I can't seem to find my stock Yami belt).. and what a difference!!.. Now she wind right out to about 82+ rpms... Makes a big difference... I also took a set of the shims out of the secondary to stock the clutch squeal... seems ok, no squealing...
I'm guessing that the XS belt was just to heavy for the clutch... It's seems to be extremely thick and heavy...
Thank god for the internet eh!!.. She's a wealth of knowledge!!
I'll keep you guys posted!.. later
P.S... This revving issue was happening completely intermittenly... not just one day to the next or weather dependant...

Well Chris, now you're under-reving about 300 rpm from peak horsepower. When you get the chance go out and pick up a new yamaha 8DN belt and you should be pretty well spot on for clutching rpm. You want your peak rpm to be at 8500 on a long pull at wide open throttle and if you said the guy you bought it off of has done some clutching then it sounds like he got it pretty good. I guess we'll find out when you slap that new belt on!

The reason that the ultimax belts yield lower rpms is because they are a softer rubber and they grip the clutch more. A stock yamaha belt is harder and will outlast an ultimax by a lot.
As far as your first post goes where you said "It seems to me if it was a clutch issue, wouldn't the sled still try to rev right up? Or is the engine revs limited by clutch engagement?.." Clutching can be pretty complicated at times. I will explain it all to ya later. It's pretty easy to understand... sort of lol.
