Well to make this post short, i went riding last night in about 0 weather, negative 40 degree with the wind chill, and the heated shield frove up like a rock. Thought it would do better, how do you guys like yours? Should i be riding with my vents closed or open in that type of weather?
First time i have ever had one, and tested to see if it was getting power with a test light and it was, but for 90 bucks figured it would hold up against most weather!

Make sure that your breath is going out through the bottom of the helmet. There are modulars that have special air force like mouthpieces, but I have never had a problem without one. I sometimes crack mine open one notch when riding slow and breathing hard from working the trail.
Helps to not have your jacket tucked up too tight. Mine's just a cheap HJC generic.

Did you wire it into a 12v source? Mine never freezes up when wired to a 12v source... i hooked it up to a 6v source this year because all I had to do was snap the connectors for the handwarmers on... it works ok until it gets about -20 C (somewhere around -10 f i think) I will be wiring it into the headlight wire when it's warmer out.

I have a HJC. When it was new it worked awsome. I never used a breath deflector and it worked in all kinds of conditions. Then it slowly lost its strength. You can put power to it, but that don't mean much. There is a power bar on the top and one on the bottom of the sheild. When the power is supplied, it is the current (or little force field) between the 2 bars that creates the heat to keep it clear. On the second sheild I did a current flow check (pardon me for the correct elec term) to get the best one. Found they vary quite a bit even when brand new. When the 2nd shield quit, instead of forkin out another $100 I opted for a motoX helmet and goggles.

I love mine and would not ride without it. Open a vent on the helmet a little and it should work great. Another thing to check is the shield. Hook it up to the sled and check for power at the shield.

Make sure you have a regulated 12 volt source because too much voltage will fry that sucker in no time flat. You may have around 12 at idle but make sure you only have around 12 while reving it up. I'm talking from experience here. If you have more than 12, find a different feed. (Blue light wire under the handle bar pad is popular). My HJC gets a little frosty low and in the center when it's that cold. I use the breath deflector that came with the bucket. Good luck.

love mine on my hjc cl-12. dont use breath director at all. helps keep the snow off and it clear when it is really cold out. now if i could get one for my glasses i would be all set.

I got a cat helmet with an electric shield been out in -30F (not counting the windchill) and it did start fogging on the sides a bit, but I could see in front of me just fine.

wire it right to the accessory plug on top of the battery - mine never freezes up and I don't run a breath deflector either.

Hjc cl-12 with electric shield, 7 years old and still going.I remember shortly after getting it people saying there nice , but won't last long.I guess I proved them wrong, but I am surprised its lasted this long! Its only fogged on me once while out in very cold weather and a terrible lake affect blizzard between Newberry and Paradice years ago, it snowed so hard that day I could'nt see my gauges at times. That day my shield just made ice and fogged.Other than that one time its awsome and would'nt be without one.

I have 2 helmets with electric shield. In order for me to wear glasses,I bought a flip up helmet.Flip it up and spread helmet open to drop over your head and glasses. Then snap it shut. Then you can fip up your visor separately from there when you stop for a break.

Always a good idea to breath through your nose rather than your mouth too, especially when it's minus 40!!!

Yeah one night it went out it worked great, the buddy i was riding with his was fogging up mine was great, around 0 degrees!
It was extremely, i mean crazy cold out, i was an idiot to go riding that night, but hey im young lol... I was the only one out on the trails and i know why, i was layered up so much i could harldy move (would help maybe if i had a stock windy).

Well my SkiDoo Modular now has the heated shield. I have it wired straight to the battery. It does not fog. Had it down to -10F ambient temp. My glasses fog up but not the visor. I do not use the breath deflector. And I have a collette communicator that I talk to others in my party with and that makes fogging worse if your shield is fog prone.
The heated shield is not a perfect fog free visor. It can still fog and might even ice up. On my former HJC helmet I regularly fogged/iced up the lower inch or so around my mouth/nose when it was real cold out.
Yours might also have a seal breach between the 2 layers.

Never had a heated shield and never really needed it except when ditch riding with lots of powder flying up over the windshield onto the front of my helmet. Ive ridden 10 hour days in the UP down to -20 actual temp and never had more than a small spot of fog. Ive got a Yamaha Sno force helmet so I cant speak for other helmets out there. My friend got an HJC and his shield didnt come in time for our trip and he said he never fogged up at all. Guess it depends on what kind of helmet you have.
I wanted one real bad last weekend. Stopped at one dealer, and you'd think I made it up to add one to a shield. It's a huge vision safety factor. Someone is bound to get hurt.
I have a hard time believing no fogging and icing up on a normal helmet at -20.
At 25-30 mph maybe, and shield cracked a notch.
Not without foam ear plugs up your nose, and duct taped lips at 40 or more closed.
3 of us with normal helmets all froze up.
Want to see real quick freeze-up? Go across the lake 87mph with shield closed
and chin locked at 10 above.
To make it on shore to navigate narrow rough path at night we all had them wide open.
I need to mount a sizable knob on left side of shield to flip it open with fat gloves on.
I looked down as my water bottle slipped out of my hand moving maybe 30 - 40 as it spilled across the seat I thought I was going to get wet. I looked again and it was frozen instantly across the seat. Then I realized it was cold.
So who sells the best add on heated shield?
That's the Question. ?

Well looks like mine is working just fine then, wish it would warm up a little bit though, can only stand 0 degree weather with a wind chill for so long!
