Hey there boys, i experienced the first bit of what i call serious trouble with my sled this past weekend. the primary sliding sheeve (yamaha part number 8bv-17620-11-00) came apart right where the cap bolts on. it was quite the bang when it happened. when it blew, parts punched a hole in my belly pan and dented my belt guard. what can i blame this on, everyone i have spoken to has never seen nor experienced this before??? i obtained a used part from the service manager at my dealer. it looks to be in perfect condition. big money savings, i had a new bushing installed in it...

Without seeing the part, it is hard to diagnose.
It could have been heat stress caused by belt slippage, or maybe at some point the clutch cap bolts were overtorqued, or possibly a couple other things.
It is wise to inspect the clutch sheaves on a regular basis. Just remember they don't always go down or up when they grenade. Some times they come back right where your leg is.

i grenaded a primary once on my '97 SX 700, made a big mess. Ripped through the belly pan, belt guard, powermadd box on the belt guard, hood, footrest, bent the secondary sheaves, and destroyed the belt. Expensive day, but lucky that my leg was still there after all of that. Usually the smoking gun is large amounts of belt slip that put a ton of heat into the sheaves causing them to expand and contract a lot and eventually crack and explode.
