as the title says is the 76 srx crank the same as the GPX? space between the cyclinder bases on the srx looks wider but i thought i remembered that the gpx and srx share the same crank. true or not? and yes im only talking about the 76 SRX as 77+ have two bearings on the mag side 76 only has one like the gpx.

well i looked at all the part numbers on the yamaha fiche site. the 75 gpx and 76 srx shared only 1 exact part number crank wheel. this part found in the 76 srx had an 878 prefix aka 75 GPX and was the same as the one from the gpx. al the other crank part numbers were the same except the 76 parts had the 8A7 prefix instead of 878. i do belive that this means that they could be different for example 76 srx 340 and 440 base gaskets same part number except different prefix 8A7 and 8A8 these gaskets are different. i guess il only realy know when i get my hands on a crank case and put the gpx crank in it and see what happens.

ALWAYS REMEBER THE FIRST THREE LETTERS OR NUMBERS WAS THE MODEL CODE PREFIX. HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH PARTS OR WHAT FITS. IF YOU THINK IT DOSE THAN WHAT ABOUT 8F2 AND 8HO !!!. I CAN TELL YOU THE 75 GPX AND THE 76 SRX ARE REAL REAL CLOSE. ! 3:16 (yammie tony)

right i know its the model prefix. but it does have a bearing on what parts will interchange or are other wise identical.

example

8A8-11351-00-00
8A7-11351-00-00

those are the #'s for 76 340 and 76 440 cylinder base gaskets. aside from the prefix the the numbers are identical. even take away the prefix and you could be fooled to think its the same part physically and dimensionally. when in fact they are not in this case the model prefix designates two parts that are very different but would seem similar from the part numbers.

i have come to believe that the only way two parts are garanteed to be the same just from there part numbers is if they share the same prefix as well as the remaining identical part number.

thats not to say that there are not parts that exist that have different prefixes but are in fact the same part dimensionally.

AHOOD, GREAT EXAMPLE. BUT IF YA CHECK PREFIX MODEL NUMBERS, YOU FIND ONE MODEL IS A 340 , THE OTHER IS A 440. I GUESS YAMAHA FIGURES ONE WOULD KNOW DEFFERENCE IN MODELS. I KNOW WHAT YOUR SAYING AND YOUR RIGHT. LOOK AT THIS
8F2- 77 SRX PREFIX
8H0- 78 SSR PREFIX
PARTS FOR THESE SLEDS WERE SO CLOSE, THAT YAMAHA ACTUALLY SUPERSEEDED 8HO INTO THEIR OBSLETE 77 SRX PARTS FISHE. YOU KNOW HOW MANY GUYS ORDERED 8F2 CYLINDERS FROM YAMAHA AND GOT 8H0 BECAUSE 8F2 WERE NOT AVAILABLE ANYMORE. I GUESS LIKE YOU SAID, YOU WON,T KNOW UNTIL YA TRY IT. I DO REMEMBER WHEN WE WERE ICE RACING OUR 76, ALOT OF PARTS WERE CLOSE TOO GPX, REAL CLOSE WAS ING. PARTS. 3:16 (yammie tony)

i got a 76 srx crank case and it seems the gpx crank will fit. i think i would just have to swap the pto side bearings as the locating snap ring groove lines up on the end bearing not the inside bearing. dilema solved

A.,

I just did the same check this weekend with 338 GPX and 340 SRX. I came to the same conclusion you did - just need to swap/change positions of the PTO end bearings and you'd be good to go.

Funny though, the exploded view of the two cranks from the online Yam. parts catalogue shows the bearings/circlips in the same position/orientation for both sleds.

Drop me a PM Adam - I've still got parts we talked about a while ago.
