need help putting on chain cvr WITH reverse

Took off my chain case cover today for an oil change and inspection. '99 vmax 600 triple with reverse. I did this about 3-4 time b4 and once on a Viper w/o problems, today it seems the lever is stuck in reverse. everything came apart EZ and put together ez. Maybe I was lucky b4, but what's the trick? I know there is a lever on the inside of the cover with 2 fingers that non reverse models don't have. Maybe it needs to be inserted into something? I took the cover off in "forward" and put it on in "forward", but by the time it was bolted down, the lever is in "reverse" and won't move. Ideas? Thanks!

You've been lucky the previous times. Those two fingers in the cover slide into the groove on the outside edge of the lower gear.
