recoil assembly

Hi,
I'm putting back together the recoil (pull rope assembly) on a 95 Vmax 600 and the spring is driving me insane.

Is there some tricks or an easy process to get this damn thing back together?

I can get the spring to stay in the rope holder plastic part, but then it won't grab on the edge on the metal cover.

sounds like you just about have it............may need to just use your pliers to bent the spring a bit to get it to line up, then it should catch the tab you are talking about............???

I dont know what happened to your recoil but for future reference if your rope just broke you do not need to take the rewind and the spring out to replace the rope. But now that you already have it apart, one thing i have found that helps is to have a buddy put some nylon zip strips on the spring once you get it wound up real tight in your hands, then place it in the cover and cut the zip strips while holding the spring down to make sure it doesn't fly out. Makes it much easier to get the tab locked into the metal without it going flying. Then you just have to get the rewind to lock into the other end of the spring. Then start spinning it like you are pulling the recoil but without putting the rope through the hole. This can be tough to do because the rewind is so close to the metal cover, but just take your time. Once you get several turns on it you can put it through the hole. Test it several times to see if there is enough spring power to pull it back in efficiently. If not, take the rope back out of the hole and turn it some more to tighten the spring. If you have the spring too tight you will also know because you will not get full extension on the rope before the spring binds, then you have to turn the rewind back a turn or two to loosen the spring a bit. This may be somewhat confusing but im sure you can figure it out. Just be patient!

I got it doing pretty much exactly as you described...that zip tie made all the difference.

Good tip with checking the spring after...I had it too tight and had to loosen it.

Only 3 more sleds to do the maintenance and summerize! :-) Great excuse to hang out in the garage.

I just did my recoil spring used a vise grip swivel head 4inch welding clamp. Clamped outer spring clip in slot to outer metal recoil cover with half of swivel head over were spring would rest. Held recoil up side ways with one hand tilted so spring was away from cover and slower worked spring around and under clamp head took less time to do spring then to type this answer clamp runs around 12bucks might need the six inch version for srx as I think cover is thicker hope this helps.
